Decided to rewatch the whole DCAU (minus Zeta, and some Static)

Shows;
Gotham Girls web series (finished that four days ago)
Batman: The Animated Series (20 episodes in so far)
The New Batman Adventures
Superman: The Animated Series
Justice League
Static Shock

Justice League Unlimited
Batman Beyond

Movies;
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman & Mr Freeze: SubZero
(may skip that one - saw it only a week ago)
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

I'll also include the movies Batman and Harley Quinn, and Justice League vs the Fatal Five. Lots of debate about those two, but after looking at Bruce Timm's comments and the videos from the Watchtower Database guys (much respect!), they're in as far as I'm concerned.

I'll post when I finish - probably around 2026.

reply

Definitely post your though as you make your way through.

Funny, I couldn't stand Batman and Harley Quinn actually lol.

reply

Will do! πŸ‘ BAHQ has grown on me. Still can't stand the fart jokes though!

reply

BTAS 1st season is 65 episodes - I'm now 35 in!

reply

any memorable highlights down memory lane so far? I haven't rewatched the series in years aside from some random episodes here and there.

reply

Rewatching the series Bluray discs on a projector. What a goregous show and transfer. Most of all the episodes are solid. Even episodes people dont like such as Batman in my Basement, The Underdwellers, and The Forgotten are still entertaining. Any episodes with his mainstream enemies are excellent.

Then there are episodes like where Batman gets a mob boss to give up his drug business through the church and his drug addicted son. Very powerful. The Gray Ghost episode is excellent and makes you want to call your dad to tell him you love him. Thr Clay Face episodes are about as dark as the show gets and I appreciate the show more now than when i was a kid. This 90s Batman cartoon has aged like a fine wine. The Bluray release is worth it and I love Mask of the Phantasm was included because i watched that a dozen times growing up.

I wasnt as big of a fan of Superman TAS but i did watch it when i was young. Want to watch Batman Beyond and Batman Superman Worlds Finest KIDS WB movie which was also excellent again. I probably will watch Superman eventually because that show had a charm to it even though I was never a big Superman fan. Im not interested in much newer shows or movies these days so Im glad I got something excellent to watch now.

reply

Hmm, I don't recall the mob boss one. But yeah, gray ghost, clay face, and the batman in my basement are some of the ones I love rewatching.

I probably should try buying all of these on disc at some point. And yeah, same here, wasn't a fan of superman TAS. Wasn't really into the character at all (and I personally didn't like World's Finest).

reply

Okay, I finished BTAS first season (65 episodes). It's interesting. Some episodes that I didn't like so much before, I rated higher this time around; and some that I used to like more, I rated lower. Every episode that features Joker and Harley though is an absolute cracker. To say Hamill and Sorkin nailed their characterisations almost feels like an understatement, with that dynamic between the two somehow managing to be both hugely entertaining and deeply tragic. So, so good.

Other standouts, Two-Face parts I and II, Perchance to Dream, Beware The Gray Ghost, Mudslide, and Heart of Steel parts I and II.

Low points for me are definitely I've Got Batman in My Basement, The Forgotten and The Underdwellers,

Next up, Mask of the Phantasm...

reply

Mask of the Phantasm was as good as I remembered. Seen it many times, but this is the first time I've watched it as part of a rewatch of the whole of BTAS/DCAU. Funny thing, although it absolutely makes sense as part of BTAS, for some reason it also still has a feeling of being its own thing.

I'm now fourteen episodes into BTAS season two, and it's holding up well. Nothing I'd call weak, but standout episodes so far are Trial, House and Garden, Harlequinade, and Baby-Doll. Baby-Doll in particular is a pretty dark, psychological tale with bit of a gut-punch ending. Should have season two finished over the next few days.

reply

Sorry for the lack of responses. I've been wanting to sit down and watch a few of the ones you're highlighting to make comments, but clearly I have not :D. Will prioritize the ones you're listing for sure. Maybe I can get my gf to watch them with me.

I saw Mask of the Phantasm a few times in the past decade or so, and I loved it. I think I just wasn't able to appreciate it back when I saw it in theaters way back when. But now, I'm like, whoa, it really pushed the envelope on what we thought we could have expected from TAS.

reply

No worries! 😊 Hope you (and your gf) get to watch some and look forward to seeing what you (and she) think of them now. I envy you seeing MotP in a theatre - I don't think it got a theatrical release here in the UK.

reply

Second part of season two (and so the whole 85 episodes) of BTAS done. Highlights would be Second Chance, Deep Freeze, Batgirl Returns, and of course Harley's Holiday πŸ˜‚

Also rewatched Batman & Mr Freeze: SubZero.

Next up, Superman: The Animated Series. STAS is a show I never watched a lot of (not a huge Superman fan) but given that I'm doing the whole of the DCAU I don't want to miss anything that might get referenced further down the line. So, on to the first season...

reply

How did you feel about subzero. I remember loving that when it came out. And then when I revisited it, it just didn't feel as impactful. The ending was nice though. Happy for Freeze (though clearly that got retconned to extend his tragedy lol).

reply

I gave SubZero an 8/10. DCAU Freeze was always a relatable villain, and Michael Ansara's voice performance was a huge part of that. He made sure you never forgot that beneath that cold exterior, Freeze was human. Art/animation were fine (some CGI jarred a little due to its age, but not a huge deal). It's an uncomplicated story, but it's pretty touching. And Barbara gets some cool (no pun intended!) action.

reply

First season of STAS done - and it was a slog. It's not bad, but I've never connected with Superman as a character. The only thing that raises interest in me is some of the supporting players (so far, Lobo in The Main Man parts I and II, and Metallo in The Way of All Flesh).

Taking a day's break (and a deep breath), then on to season two (to be followed by TNBA, then STAS season three).

reply

I was kinda hoping you would have a different take upon revisiting STAS but this just reinforces the fact that I think I wouldn't enjoy it. Without connecting to the character, it's really hard to get through. But it'll be cool to see how much your background will inform your subsequent justice league viewings (and the other shows that followed). I always wondered about potential references I just didn't know about.

reply

When I get to JL/JLU I'll definitely highlight any obvious callbacks!

reply

Second season of STAS done. Hard going at times, but like the first season there have been some standout episodes - Livewire, Mxyzpixilated, Double Dose, World's Finest, The Hand of Fate, Apokolips... Now! and Little Girl Lost.

World's Finest is of course the first meeting between Supes and Batman (the catfight between Harley and Mercy is still side-splittingly funny).
The Hand of Fate introduces Dr Fate, although it's obvious that he and Superman know each other and have fought side-by-side before. Wonder when that was...
Little Girl Lost introduces Supergirl to the DCAU.

A couple of days break, then onto TNBA, followed by the third (and, thankfully, final!) season of STAS.

reply

TNBA and the third season of STAS done.

I don't find the art style change from BTAS to TNBA as jarring as some tbh, and there are some great episodes here; Double Talk, Growing Pains, Over the Edge, Old Wounds, Girl's Night Out, and probably the best DCAU Batman episode of all, Mad Love (which is hands down a 10/10 - if Joker: Folie a Deux can tell its story half as well it'll be great).

Of the rest, there's nothing I rate lower than a 7/10, except the god-awful - and pretty universally hated - Critters. I don't know what they were thinking there. So, overall a very strong run.

As for the third and final season of STAS, it's by far the best of the three, and really leans into the DCAU world-building. Once again the guest characters make this for me, with turns by Batman (Knight Time), the Legion of Superheroes (New Kids in Town), Green Lantern (In Brightest Day...), and Batman again (The Demon Reborn). There are also several episodes that feature Supergirl (always welcome).

I would watch the whole run of Gotham Girls next, but I watched that just a few months ago and remember it well. So a few days break, then Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, followed by Justice League.

reply

Okay, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman and the first season of Justice League watched.

I've seen Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman many times and always liked it, but I enjoyed it even more here. Whether that's because this time I watched it as part of a much larger viewing experience rather than just in isolation I don't know, but it certainly engrossed me more.

As for Justice League, man this show is so good - and I know it only gets better. Pitch-perfect way to build a universe. Favourite episodes; Secret Origins (three-parter), Paradise Lost, Fury, Legends (truly outstanding), Injustice For All, A Knight of Shadows, and The Savage Time (another three-parter). Just so, so good. I fell in love with Hawkgirl when I first watched this, and I'm still smitten! Undecided about which Superman voice actor I prefer; Tim Daly (STAS), or George Newbern (JL)...

A few days break, then on to JL season two.

reply

Second season of Justice League plus Static Shock done, finally.

Justice League really got into its stride with this second season. Favourite stories (all two-parters unless otherwise shown); Tabula Rasa, Only a Dream, The Terror Beyond, Starcrossed (three-parter), and the three standouts, Hereafter, Wild Cards, and Maid of Honor (with a heavily implied attraction between Diana and Princess Audrey...).

Static Shock was really hard to get through (I'd never watched it before). Other than the origin episode and a few others, I kept it to those that directly crossover with the rest of the DCAU (it only became part of the DCAU at the start of the second season); The Big Leagues (Batman and Robin), Hard as Nails (Batman), A League of Their Own (The Justice League), Toys in the Hood (Superman), Future Shock (Batman Beyond), and Fallen Hero (Green Lantern).

A breather, then onto Justice League Unlimited season one.

reply

Real life intruded (Dammit!!), but finally got season one of Justice League Unlimited watched.

Big difference in world-building. Between JL and JLU the League obviously went on a major recruitment drive. Great to see so many 'lesser' characters shown. We're back to single-episode storytelling here, except for the two-part season finale.

Favourite episodes; For the Man Who Has Everything (apparently the only Alan Moore adaptation that he was happy to leave his name on!), This Little Piggy (who'd have thought an episode where Wonder Woman gets turned into a pig could be so damned entertaining!), Fearful Symmetry, Ultimatum (these last two heavily foreshadow 'the Cadmus Arc' storyline that features in season two), Wake the Dead (horror-ish tale featuring the resurrection of Solomon Grundy), and The Once and Future Thing, Part One: Weird Western Tales and The Once and Future Thing, Part Two: Time, Warped (a cracking two-parter, involving time-travel to the Old West, and to the future of Batman Beyond).

A quick break, then onto JLU season two - except for the final episode, Epilogue, which I'll leave until after both the very final episode of Batman Beyond, and the movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

reply

Season two of Justice League Unlimited finally watched.

Season one is good, but season two takes it to a whole new level. The Cadmus storyline is obviously top-tier, but there are other great episodes.

Favourites; Double Date, Clash, Hunter's Moon (deals directly with the aftermath of the Justice League season two concluding three-parter, Starcrossed), and the concluding Cadmus episodes, Question Authority, Flashpoint, Panic in the Sky, and Divided We Fall. IMDb shows these last four as 'Top Rated' (I rate them 9/10, 9/10, 9/10, and 10/10 - fantastic storytelling).

Incidentally, the episode Clash features a brutal showdown between Superman and Captain Marvel (long before he was Shazam). The collateral damage they cause is absolutely unbelievable. I refuse to believe Zack Snyder didn't see this episode at some point before filming his showdown between Superman and Zod in Man of Steel.

I didn't watch Epilogue (the final episode of the season). I'll see that at the very end of this DCAU rewatch (for obvious reasons!).

A short break, then on to the movie Batman and Harley Quinn, before JLU season three.

reply

Got majorly sidetracked with the run-up to Halloween, Halloween itself, then the run-down from Halloween - so many horror movies! Anyway,

Watched the movie Batman and Harley Quinn, which I actually enjoy more each time I see it. The first time I think I gave it a 6/10, now it's an 8/10. I find it works best if you imagine it's Harley telling her version of what happened.

I also read the Harley Quinn and Batman prequel comic (five issue mini-series), and the Batman and Harley Quinn sequel comic (seven issue mini-series). DC, the makers of the movie, and (perhaps most importantly πŸ˜‚) the Watchtower Database all say they're canon to the movie.

The prequel comic is all one story that sets-up the movie. The writing's good, the art's variable. The sequel comic is a series of shorter stories focusing on where individual characters are after the events of the movie. With this one it's the art that's good, and the writing that's variable.

So, now on to JLU season three - I'll try to get as much of that watched as I can before Christmas.

reply

Is "Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero" worth it? I'm on the fence with watching it.

reply

I reviewed it soon after I'd watched it

https://moviechat.org/tt0143127/Batman-and-Mr-Freeze-SubZero/63be34cb5331634553f852ca/Still-holds-up-well

But short version... for me, definitely. Michael Ansara does a great job of voicing Freeze. The regulars of course are all spot-on (Mary Kay Bergman takes over as Batgirl). And it's a pretty touching story. I gave it 8/10
