Anyone else in love with the Iowa house?
I think I turn this on when it's showing on TV mainly just to see Laura/Sara's house in Iowa. I love it. Has anyone seen this house? Is it in Abbeville, SC, too? Ben's house next door is gorgeous, too.

shareI loved that house too! Especially how it looked in the late afternoon.
I wasn't crazy about the odd orange lighting she had in the hallway, but that was for atmosphere of course.

I loved the house too!
shareSo did I! Every time I watch the movie I wish I lived in that house. It's so quaint, adorable neighborhood, too. The inside of that house just looks like a home, the kind of home where you'd get that warm safe feeling at night (granted if I lived there I wouldn't have a psycho husband stalking me though). I don't know if I had that house if I'd keep the furnishings, they look a bit dated, but then again that adds to the appeal, the Grandmother-type house.

I loved the house too. I lived in Iowa for a year and there are many older homes like that in sleepy little towns there.
shareAlthough I bet you cannot rent a house like that for $700 a month these days, even in Iowa, I bet it's still pretty cheap to live out there in a very nice house.

I don't know--in this economy, you might be able to. I loved the Iowa house, HATED the beach house. Too much glass for me. No privacy.
shareAbsolutely love the Iowa house too! That house is my dream house. I think the differences in the houses added to the movie...the Iowa house was warm and inviting whereas the Beach house was cold and rather creepy at times. Showed the changes in her life I thought.

Jadedmystery, you should read the book by Nancy Price. It describes how she cleaned the house, painted the kitchen a cheerful color, and potted some African violets for her kitchen table. The book is just wonderful.

Did the book say how she afforded it, too? On no visible income? I'm watching the movie right now (lazily, I admit) and I can't for the life of me see where her money is coming from.

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.
She saved it little by little from her income at the library.
Probably for a long time, hoping one day her time for escape would come...
I would have enjoyed the novel much more if the author would have skipped the old lady (of whom Laura took care) and the pregnant girl. They didn't contribute much of a value to the story.
The book has nice parts like the painting, the overall feel of the town etc but there was too much that diverted me from the actual story which was supposed to be about Laura.
I didn't care for the beach house. It had no curtains. From May on they would wake up as soon as the sun comes up.
shareThe house is up for sale...

Oh, wow! This is awesome, thanks for sharing! I think I love it more. Too bad I live nowhere near this vicinity.

Wow, thanks for posting that! I LOVE that house. I wish I could live there!!!

The kitchen is WHITE!!!!!!!
j/k. The house is GORGEOUS! Wow.
I agree with the poster who said the house is too big. In reality you would want a small house if you were alone and in fear.
shareTrue, but would a more sensible place be this photogenic?
And it has an important role to play in the movie, contrasting Laura's former life to the new one. And of course providing a suitable background for the chilling finale.
BTW it's not 404 Magazine Street, it's 436 Magazine Street. I found it in Google Maps.
shareI loved that location in the movie so much that I went (on a trip from Washington, D. C., to Charleston, SC) all the way to Abbeville, SC. It was a BIG detour, but worth it.
At a gas station I asked for the house in the movie, nobody knew, but that moment a plumber came inside and heard my question. He said he just had worked on that house a few weeks ago and I should follow his car. It was only 1/2 mile or less from the gas station.
I took some pics. This was way back in early November 1998. Great memory!
I used to own a home like that about ten years ago. It's as good as it looks. Perfect for raising a family.

You owned a house like the Iowa house??! If I may be so nosy, why ever did you move away from it??
I'd want to live there forever!

I can answer this for myself, living in a simliar one (built in 1901 or so). They are OLD, COLD, falling apart, etc.! I'd take 54k for mine in Bartlesville, OK. in a heartbeat.
I only admired that really cool and unique stairwell banister which compared to mine is awesome!
Absolutely in love with the "Iowa" house. So much warmer then that cold square beach house
shareThis house reminds me of my grandmother's house in California. One floor, but same features. Multiple doors leading into multiple rooms within the house. Crystal doorknobs. Everything painted. Big porch. I loved that house. It was in our family for over 60 years.
