Aside from that, why do you think the love interest has to be classically handsome? In what way would that have benefited the plot? She falls in love with him because he's a nice guy who makes her feel safe, not because he's a male model. To extrapolate on that, she fell for her first husband's charm, looks, class, and wealth, and look where that got her. Part of her personal growth is that she can now love a man not for his superficial charm and elegance and the way he can sweep her off her feet, but for his character.
