To me it sounds like it's trying too hard to be 'western-y'.

I think Poledouris was too far out of his element when he scored this one. BP did some GREAT scores (Hunt for Red October, Starship Troopers, Conan, etc), but I agree, he did sound like he was trying to channel Elmer Bernstein throughout, "True Grit" in particular.

I don't think it's annoying but don't think it's great either. It's adequate

Nope. The score is terrific. I wish movies still got big, robust orchestral scores like this nowadays, instead of everything just being droning synths with no melody or memorable themes.

It's one of the most identifiable movie themes of the past few decades, and generally considered one of the best. I think it addes a lot to an already spectacular movie -- which is what the score is supposed to do.

Like Poloudoris' theme in Lonesome Dove, I couldn't imagine a more appropriate, or finer score.
