"Tyler" the "love interest" was poorly cast

Yup, if there was a young Demi Moore or something it would be like "damn, I can see why you feel for her." But I didn't get that with the casting here.

I mean for this "guy movie" (surfing, gun fights, bank robberies, sky diving) you'd expect the "hot chick" aspect to be a crucial element to the formula. Instead we get a "love story" that makes no sense. Had he never had a girlfriend before and fell for the first girl who put the moves on him?

Such animosity for Lori Petty!

I give Bigelow credit for going against type and casting Petty but, yeah, he's prettier than she is!

However, she has that raw edge that he needs, not only to catch the Ex Presidents but she pushes him all the way to the edge.

You gotta remember that Utah has excelled at everything he's ever done.

To meet a girl that totals him in a given and VERY dangerous arena like surfing is attractive to him.

I like blonde women with big breasts with short hair. Laurie Holden actually looks better to me as the short haired cop in Silent Hill than she does in Walking Dead.

Wow why all this hostility towards Lori Petty? I thought she looked great in the movie! I loved the dark short haired pixie hair cut. She had a nice body, too. Keanu's Johnny Utah fell for someone real who he made a connection with. It would be extremely predictable to cast some blonde beach bimbo. No doubt that will be the case in the remake.

I thought she had a lot of chemistry with Keanu Reeves. Not as much as Sandra Bullock in Speed, but enough to buy their relationship.

Have any of you imdB trolls actually surfed in SoCal? You have to be a real athlete to do this. Not some "blonde...with long fluffy hair in a tiny knit bikini..." etc

Most of the surfer girls I know are a bit more happy go lucky than she seemed, and yes, I do surf and live in socal.

I guess I can see it a bit because she had lost her parents. That will certainly harden someone.

I think Cameron Diaz would have been a better choice, although obviously she was too young and not on the scene yet. Cameron actually surfs.

This was a guy movie, for the most part, so I am surprised they did not go for someone more attractive. They could have done so without compromising the character. There are plenty of women out there who could play the tough chick, I did not find Lori Petty's acting all that remarkable.

And I hate to tell you, but I know plenty of women who are very into their looks who are real athletes. I go to crossfit with lots of them. In fact I don't think I have ever seen an alternative looking girl in my gym. That does not mean they don't exist, I just don't see it. And most of the women who surf all the time get highlights in their hair. If you spent much time in the water you would know that. Lori Petty does not look like a surfer girl, she looks like she spends too much time inside. In addition to hair highlighted by the sun, most people who spend that much time in the water have something of a tan in their face. Lori Petty does not. If you think she looks like a surfer girl you obviously don't spend much time in the water.

You won't want to except this either, but many of the men who would prefer a hot chick get plenty of women. In fact, all of the ones I know who are serious players are that way. I'm sorry the world is not the way you would like it to be.

You seem pretty bitter. You might want to do something about that. It won't help you in life. People who think Lori Petty was a lousy choice have good reasons for feeling that way. And you might want to learn to surf before you make such comments. Based on your post you obviously don't know anything about surfing. You also don't seem to know much about female athletes. Girls like Lindsey Vonn and Rhonda Rousey are much more common than the ugly ones who don't care what they look like.

Get some counseling.
