New Jack City or The Untouchables.

One movie is about Al Capone and his reign of crime in 1930s Chicago. The other is about a crack lord and his reign of crime in late 1980s New York.

There are some scenes and lines of dialogue from the Untouchables that could be re-worked into New Jack City. Remember the scene where Sean Connery threatens to shoot the corpse to get the baddie to talk? I could see Ice-T doing that. Or re-write this line of dialogue from the Untouchables.

"You want to get Nino Brown? Here's how, he pulls a knife, you pull a gat. He sends one of your guys to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the New Jack way. That's how to get Nino Brown."

So I see a lot of Scarface comparison's between NJC and the 1983 De Palma film. But I think a more accurate comparison is between NJC and De Palma's 1987 film.

I like NJC a great deal. But personally I'd rank The Untouchables higher.

I like NJC better but Untouchables is a great show too.

Many a review has compared NJC to Scarface. But I think a more accurate comparison can be made with another one of Brian De Palma’s more popular films: 1987’s The Untouchables. That film, which focused on Al Capone and the cops who took him down, was a great example of 1920s set gangster pulp. NJC, directed by Mario Van Peebles in his directorial debut, sets out to do the same for the 1980s crack era in New York City. Hence, it feels in some ways like a classic gangster picture mixed with elements of blackspoloitation films and social commentary.

New Jack City is far more interesting and refreshing. Its up there with one of Snipes best. Untouchables just feels dated and boring.

Untouchables has better acting, a more thoughtful storyline (fewer plotholes and contrivances), and better cinematography, etc.

The Untouchables is a clean story that isn't going to play well into the edgy crowd. Each is valid for their setting's time and place.

The closest analog that I can think of that line from The Untouchables is with Stone (Mario Van Peeples' character, who is kind of the Eliot Ness equivalent of New Jack City), who tells the Police Commissioner that he needs some "New Jack cops to take down a New Jack gangster".
