Anyone who thinks that Gaston was the crazy one needs to have thier head reexamined. He was spot on when he said that Belle was as crazy as her old man. She was an evil bitch who mistreated him. No wonder he snapped.
I am sick of these posts where people say Gaston was a good person and Belle was bad. He was a stupid jerk who couldn't admit Belle wasn't the right woman for him. He proceded to take her book from her and throw it in a mud puddle. He then proceeded to tell her she has no right to read and that she should put all her focus on him. That is not right! She made it clear to him she didn't like him but he was too self centered and arrogant to accept how she felt.
And the point of Beast's story is that he had been selfish and unkind. But he learned to change his ways and to love Belle for who she was. Unlike Gaston who just became more selfish and arrogant through the story. Actually, everyone in the town was a stupid jerk except the book seller who probably didn't care for Gaston either.
I'm sorry. I misremembered, because that's how the original story went, and the deadline in the movie was represented by a dying rose, so I got the thing thing mixed up.
But I hope you realize that this doesn't negate my point. The Beast's love for Belle was self-motivated and coerced.
I don't agree with comments saying that Belle was "bad."
However, the reason why this character has begun catching a lot of heat in recent years is the opening song, in which she actually puts down the townspeople as being poor, provincial and members of "the little people." (Which is an expression that rich people use to put down people of a lower class.)
We know Gaston is a jerk, but that song puts Belle's motivations for rejecting him in a bad light, so people are not liking the character.
It is implied that she came from a higher social class than them and thus didn't understand them.
She also sings about that she wasn’t originally from that village and simply never belonged there.
The problem is that she calls them provincial and little people. These are words that snobs use to insult and put down rural folks, not a question of misunderstanding. The term, "little people" is so controversial that a famous NYC hotel owner, Leona Helmsley, got into trouble when she used it.
The point is, we can play along with the movie and just write it off as misunderstanding. But people watching the movie are being put off the character.
Uh, Belle did see him as bad from the start. She tells her father he is conceited and flat out calls him prime evil to his face. He is so self absorbed he takes that as a compliment.
Let's face it, everyone in town was so impressed by what he could do they could not face the fact he was selfish and arrogant. Only Belle could see that.
Calling someone primevil does not mean you think they're a bad person. Belle thought he was rude and conceited, but even she didn't expect him to do what he eventually did.
The villagers admired Gaston's strength so much, they were blind to those qualities, but I don't think that makes them jerks.
She could have asked him why he was so interested in her and why he thought he deserved her, and what he would expected out of him. Instead, she just shoves him off by simply saying he's rude, leaving him in the dark about her reasons rather than explaining to him properly why she feels that way. She just plain rejects him without giving him ANY sense of closure, which really doesn't tell him anything, giving him more reason to chase after her. She could at least justify herself to him. She more or less just said "no" to him to mess with insecure ego and not justify her lack of interest in him. I'm not calling Gaston a hero or anything, but she acts like a hypocrite and doesn't stand up for her rights against him enough.
If she REALLY wanted to get away from him, I'm sure she was smart enough to figure out that saying things like "you're the worst at everything you do. You can't do anything right at all" enough times would certainly get under his skin and drive him away from her.
But it was clear that Gaston wouldn't have listened to whatever she said.
It is clear too to anybody but a narcissist like Gaston that Belle wasn't interested.
Even if she did nothing but talk trash to him and say horrible things to him, he would still chase her? That wouldn't sound like the woman he first saw in Belle at all.
She did eventually call him a monster, but that only made him lead a mob towards his "rival".
Don't believe that you can ever reason with somebody like Gaston.
