SOMETHING MUST BE DONE

To all the kids of the 90's out their, who are sick to death of seeing our memories of Nickelodeon disappear like they were never there, listen up.Over the past 5-6 years our shows have slowly been taken off the air one by one until their was nothing left but anime *beep* and shows about 13 girls with to many problems. No new nick show could ever replace the old school nick of the 90's. It was the times, when kids would be kids. They wouldnt be dressing like miniature prostitutes and looking up to Vanessa Hudgens and her naked cell phone pictures. We kids of the 90's feel this way because Old School Nick is something we grew up with. We loved those shows. And we will for the rest of our lives. I mean, no new shows could ever replace the good times we had watching All That on Snick, or watching AHHH Real Monsters and Rocko before we went school, or staying up late to watch Doug,Rugrats, and Clarissa. I may only be speaking for myself, but those were some of the happiest moments of my life. They could never be replaced by any of this Unfabulous *beep* they air now. Back in the day kid shows were kid shows. I dont remember ever turning on Nick and seeing a bunch of cheap slutty looking girls or a bunch of california pretty boy. We had it made. Their had to be at least one show on Nick that we could watch over and over and never get sick of it. Now they have the same shows on 7 times a day. I mean the only time they put on old Nick shows is like at 6 AM, once a week if we're lucky.I know that these shows were canceled, but would it kill the producers of Nickelodeon to try something different and put some shows on that are actually worth watching?? If these shows were still played in reruns i would definitely watch them. And i know alot of others would too. I don't know anout any of you readers, but i miss the simple days of waking up and watching the Rugrats before they grew up. These were our shows. We grew up with them, we loved them, at times we reallied on them. We are the kids of the 90's, and no new nick shows could EVER replace the fond memories we have of being a kid and being able to sit down and watch some awesome TV. Do a million fans a favor and give us back our memories.

yup =-]

As a fellow kid of the 90's I have to agree. All the wonderful shows on Nick just vanished from the air. Today's shows are just garbage!

Nice speach dude, i was born in 1988, so i grew up on the golden age of nickelodeon,..yeah basically one by one every last show that i grew up on was picked away like they never even existed. Its funny because i didnt really notice till about a couple of years ago when one day i was like..HOLY *beep* HAPPENED TO DOUG? ROCKO? KENAN AND KEL? ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?!!!!!!!!.....i can remember the last few cartoons they had that i actually watched before they got rid of the last strand of goodness that was called nick.....it was i believe, rocket power, invader zim, hey arnold. After they were gone, i never really watched nickeloeon anymore......THEY REALLY NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I WOULD DEFINATELY WATCH NICK AGAIN IF THEY START AIRING THE SHOWS THAT MADE THEM the BEST STATION ON TELEVESION....nick had a big impact on me growing up, now it just isnt the same...THEY need to cut their *beep* and wake up.

i was born in 93, and EVERY show on Nickelodeon i could watch. my DADS favorite cartoon is real monsters. god i miss keenan and kal. : (

I was born in 1980 and remember shows like Maya the Bee, The Noozles, Today's Special, You can't do that on Television, and many others. I remember when the Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, Rocko's mondern life, Ahhh! Real Monsters first premiered. I remember thinking these shows would be on forever.

On an off subject, I remember when Nick at Nite showed Mr.Ed and My Three Sons.

reply

I was just talking about Maya the Bee and the Noozles the other day. God, those were the golden years of Nick.(I was born in '81, by the way.)

Nick At Nite. It's TV done right. Your favorite shows, your favorite stars watch Nick At Nite that's where they are. (or something like that)

I used to watch Get Smart. And Hi Honey I'm Home - that was a weird show. The Round House, Weinerville, Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, Rocko, Guts, Clarissa Explains it All, Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, Nick Arcade, Adventures of Pete and Pete, The Little Koala, Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, and You Can't Do That On Television.

Remember Out of Control with Dave Coulier? "Cut It Out" lol. And I don't know if they still do this, but Nickelodeon used to have massive Earth Day celebrations.

reply

I cannot believe someone else remembers "Hi Honey I'm Home". I LOVED it.

when will they air "Sex Ed Zoey 101"? And who would have saw this coming?

reply

Oh get off your high horse! How old are you, like 19? 20? Sure things change but if you're calling "All That" a quality Nickelodeon show, you're proving in my mind that you're part of Nickelodeon's current terrible programming. It was kids like you who loved that show and it inspired some of the crap that's on there now. Like it or not, the shows on there now are mini-MTV shows. MTV wasn't what it is now back then, either. They used to play music. Do you watch MTV? Probably. And it's marketed at you because you were at the head end of the generation that you now call "miniature prostitutes." Unless you were at the end of your high school career or past high school before Britney Spears, you really can't complain. You started it. Your peers said that Britney was okay and that has led to what is on Nickelodeon today.

And the answer to the question you will most undoubtedly as me, I am 27.

And Vanessa Hudgens is not a bad person for her "naked cell phone pictures." Her only fault is that she is famous. Non-famous people do it all the time and are never criticized for it. Don't believe me? Check out personal ads on Craigslist.(I actually didn't know who she was until just now. I had to look her up.)

Oh. And I'm pretty sure Vanessa Hudgens is a DISNEY star...

I don't think we'll ever get our shows back . .

I remember signing a petition online my freshman year of high school to bring back classic Nick programming . . .

Now I've been out of HS for two years this May . . . still nothing.

The best I've seen is Global Guts, Legends of the Hidden Timple, and Wild and Crazy Kids . . . all on GAS. *cries* I want my salute your shorts!!!!!

All that was a quality show. Sure it was hit and miss, but all shows of that format are like that(MadTv, SNL). It gave us Repairman man man man man, and Lactose Intolerance Man. It was Nick saying, yeah, we'll still take chances.

I didn't watch MTV much back in the day, except for MTV Oddities, AeonFlux, and a few others. I hated that even when they had "Bring back the rock" weekends, they'd still play hours of rap with the little BBtR logo spinning in the corner, and the BBtR promos before and after commercials. I definitely don't watch it now though. Do they even have music videos anymore or is that only on MTv2?

When someone graduated doesn't affect a persons right to complain. Just because a person was in middle school during Britney's rise, that doesn't mean that they supported her. Kids didn't write in demanding a change of programming. Someone at Nick did. Where are the kids game shows like Double Dare?

I think that it is a change in the philosophy of the shows. In the good old days the shows were about kid power. Everything had a more rebellious flavor to it. The shows had kids as people who were brave and clever. Salute Your Shorts and The Adventures of Pete & Pete are both prime examples. Kids who existed mostly within the rules, but when they felt they were being treated unjustly they would rally together and achieve some measure victory. Today Nick has embraced the classic sitcom mold of, kid breaks rules, gets into trouble, is punished(either by parents or the situation created by their rebellious actions) but learns a lesson.

Good speech, brother. As another child of the 90's I feel ya. I miss Pete and Pete and Are you Afraid of the Dark. All those shows were great. Ok, there was this show, way back in the day. I can't for the life of me remember what its called, and worse I can barely remember the premise of the show. Its really vague, but the characters in this show could teleport, and it was live action, not a cartoon. If anybody knows what show I'm talking about I would love the help. The damn thing is driving me crazy!

The people of Tomorrow is the show, English show and great! And to the Original poster, I couldn't have said it better myself. I was born in '84 and I can remember UCan'tDoThatonTV, Hey Dude, Ren and Stimpy, Salute you shorts(favorite), my brother and me, pete and pete, RUAfraidofthe Dark, Rugrats, Doug, Welcome Freshmen, Rocko, etc....Salute your shorts single-handedly made me want to go to camp (which I did in '93). And Snick? I couldn't WAIT to have sleepovers on Saturday nights! What I wouldn't pay to see those shows again. Nothing but ho's and here-crap on now. I don't cry much but just thinking about it gets the water works goin'. Oh well....

Oh man I hear you guys. Pete and Pete was so unique and great I don't think we realized what we were being exposed to! But someone touched earlier on the original NickatNight schedule. We we got to watch classic television which helped develop my pallate for what I consider quality film and television. I remember staying up late of Fridays and watching Dobie Gillis,Patty Duke, My Three Sons and Mr Ed. How great of an experience was that to see those shows! And to be so young and fall in love with the classics was something I think the heads at Nick at that time didn't mean to do, but help inspire future cinema buffs.

Hear, hear. I'm really a child of the 80's too, and I remember all the great stuff that was on Nick, hell, I remember the first shows that were on nick and they were all fantastic, not like the sh!t that they air nowadays. I think that a great idea would be for nick to create another channel that only shows classic nick stuff, I mean, hell, they already have like 6 channels anyway, why not another one that would actually be good!?!

reply

AMEN! We truely do need to do something about this.

This is what kills me the most though: Nickelodeon (in 2005) created one of the best things they could ever have done: Nicelodeon Rewind, which was a banner that applied to a block of television on the channel that aired old promo's/bumpers and shows, merchandice at Hot Topic, and, above all, DVD's of the classic shows we love. Now look. There isn't anymore merchendice, the TV block is gone, and the DVD's became extinct following the second season release of Pete & Pete (which has an insert saying to keep a lookout for more Rewind titles 'coming soon'), which was the third release in the series. I don't know why but I didn't pick up the DVD's until recently and they are great: Clarissa S1 has old Nick promo's that were beyond great and Pete & Pete has actual Special Features (commentaries). It's possible Nick wanted the line to fail, so they didn not market the DVD's at all and had very few stores carry them.

Something truely needs to be done; people like us are very nostalgic and love the past, and combine the fact that these shows are actually good (something Nick programing is no longer) with the fact that we grew up with these (plus actual extres) and you have some of the best DVD's on the market. But no, they have to go and *beep* it all up, making we the people pay for it. I showed a few episodes of Pete & Pete to these kids I babysit and even they said that they though it was a lot better than what Nickelodeon shows today. But what can we do? It's not like TV is the most important thing in the world but these were great shows that we all love, we can't just let this happen. Petitions do sh!t and letters & e-mails will be ignored so what can we do? We all awnt DVD releases of Salute Your Shorts, Doug, Hey Dude, Rocko's Modern Life, All That (old), and many more; other than the remaining four seasons of Clarissa and the last season of Pete & Pete, I would like to see American releases of Are You Afraid of the Dark? under the banner; if that happens I won't have to pay $35 to import them from Canada and we will get a couple extras, like SNICK bumpers or something. These shows can't just rot away in our monds, to quote the original p[oster, SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!!!!!!!

I just don't understand why we have to suffer. I mean, our parents get to watch the shows they watched when they were children on channels like TV land, and a while back some of their shows were on Nick at Nite (now the shows are more from the late 80's early 90's, fresh prince, roseanne, cosby show..etc). Why doesn't Nick just get another channel where we can watch the early Nick shows. and ZeldaFan, you are so right about the early nickelodeon generation of viewers, we are very nostalgic.. I know I am. This morning at around 6AM my tv was still on from the night before and I had left nick at nite on which at 6 turns back to nickelodeon, but I noticed that rugrats was on but they were all teenagers , it was so strange. I'm sick of hearing about this zoey 101 garbage with a pregnant 16 year old starring in her own show. You never saw melissa joan hart getting pregnant on clarissa explains it all.. I'm truly disappointed with nickelodeon, and wish they would do something for us

Heres what I personally think Nickelodeon should do:

Resurrect Nick Rewind; make new merchandice and release more DVD's, the rest of Clarissa Explains it All and the last Pete & Pete most importantly. This time, market the DVD's by running ad's on numerous TV stations. Bring back the block and air some classic shows in it, including those on the DVD's with ad's for the DVD's playing on the network, making the current generation (who I actually feel sorry for looking at Nickelodeon now) aware that Nick was once a good station and see it's old shows, so they will be part of the audiance for the discs. On the DVD's, put in some good extra features along with classic Nickelodeon bumpers and promo's for the show (and some of the old shorts that used to air; I'm dying to see Foilman and Inside Mr. Frear's Ears again, right now they are vague memories), including intro's and such for SNICK on the shows that aired as part of the block in the good ol' days (play those and watch four shows Saturday night and I gaurantee it will take you back). Then just make sure everything is uncut, runs well, and has the Rewind banner and watch them all sell. Oh, and one more thing: DO IT NOW, NICK!!!!!

I also think they should turn Nick 2 (a useless channel; essencially Nickelodeon only 3 hours behind) into a Nick Rewind station, airing all old Nick stuff from late 80's to around 1997 or 8 (and all Kenan & Kel), with a weekly day dedicated to everything before that from the stations beginning (the silver ball logo and stuff). Saturday nights they should air all original Snick matterial with one of the original line-ups, chosen at random. Nicktoons a few years ago was a great channel because all they aired were the good old Nicktoons, had no comercials, and even played music videos from a few shows. Now, aside from a couple occasional airings of their good shows, it's just as crappy as Nick.

Well do have a few of out shows on DVD not counted the ones released under the rewind banner; all of Ren & Stimpy is out on DVD though I have yet to get them. But for some reason I don't see any reference to Nickelodeon on the boxes (from what I've seen) and the first (and best) set is edited (despite the big UNCUT lable). Also, there is a warning sign and it's treated as an adult series for whatever reason, which it is far from obviously. The Adult Party Cartoon (which is way too dirty, even for me) is one thing but whatever. Concedering it's one of the original (and best loved) Nicktoons I would hope there are some logo's in there. The first five seasons of Are You Afraid of the Dark? are on bare DVD's in Canada, but Nickelodeon has an opertunity to release them in America with a few extras and under the banner (I'd rather buy theirs rather than spend a lot importing them). The first season of Alex Mack is also out, but I have no idea why. It was clearly a Jessica Alba cash-in (I don't own this either) but even though Nick has rights to this, I don't think they were involved with the DVD. Everyone probobly knows this but I'm just putting it out there.

I wish the DVD's you drempt about were real. That would really be great. Sadly I was born rather late in the game (8/14/1991) so a lot of my memories of the 90's are kinda vague. So thats why it means a lot to me to get these shows on DVD. Yeah I am kinda obsessed about it but I do have a life (sort of); it's just that I am really agrivated about this whole ordeal and I have no idea why Nick is so reluctant to give the people what they want when it isn't hard for them them to do so. I seriously think that Nick forced the line to fail on purpose so they didn't have to bother with any of their old crap any more. I don't know why, but it's the only reason that I can think of as to why they would do this. Sorry if I am being annoying about this but like I siad, it's just annoying.

If someone is a business major or something, please get into the Nickelodeon ranks and take them the **** over so we can get these shows back on. If they made every last of these shows round 2 in the 2010s I would watch them. I have some Salute your shorts shows downloaded from Bearshare and RUAfraidof the Dark has some episodes on Youtube. Better watch them before they take them off (if they haven't already). All this PC talk and they have on hos like Vanessa H and other 'role models' on tv. I don't understand it. Maybe in the 2010s, we will see a return to good shows I hope.

yep, reading this message board almost brings me to tears. i was born in 1986, so i lived these shows growing up. i would have never gotten through summer vacations as a kid without nick. i can't stand what these young kids and preteens of today have to watch on t.v. not just shows on nick, but the disney channel, too. you can't go anywhere without seeing hannah montana or high school musical everywhere you turn. if hannah montana was on 15 years ago, i'm sure it wouldn't have been half as popular as it is today.

does anyone remember stick stickley? he was a talking popcicle stick with wiggly eyes.

i guess we'll have to wait another decade or so before these shows we grew up with are really considered "classics" and get a revival either on t.v. or d.v.d.

reply

Oh my god, Stick Stickly was AWESOME! I remember they had some special that involved him and his family meeting his long-lost brother or something. I saw my first episode of The Brady Bunch on his show randomly (viewer request). Not that it matters now as he hasn't been on Nick in nearly over a decade. I'd love to see a DVD compilation of a lot of his shows/matterial but there are next to no odds of that.

Just thinking about the whole situation almost brings me to tears; TV may not be the greatest or most important thing in the world, but everything on TV today is absolute garbage and we may never see these nor only classic and memorable but actually really good shows again. It also bothers me that I was born in 1991 and therefor don't rmember Classic Nick (and MTV and Disney) as well as most. I have cousins who are in love with Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers (they insist I look like one of the Jonas bros.) as well as High School Musical and it annoys the hell out of me because they are horrable and I don't see why they are seriously the most popular thing in years.

I doubt our shows will be ever be on DVD and I'll tell you why (other than that it would involve Nickelodeon aknowlaging the past):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=x39CrACq3Qo&feature=related

That is the fourth part of four vids about a Classic Nick fan discussing his experiances pitching a show for Nickelodeon. During a Q & A (discussed a minute or two into the video), it was asked to a Nick exec. why Invader ZIM (the last good show Nick had to offer) was cancelled because the DVD's and Hot Topic merchandice brought in (and still is) a lot of money for Nick. The exec said that Nickelodeon is one of the most profitable stations in the country and that their age semographic is ages 6-11 so they basicly didn't care what HS and collage kids had to say. I'm assuming that same comment applies to the Nickelodeon Rewind DVD's because 11 year olds weren't exactly rushing out to buy them. What bothers me about this is that if Nick reran the classics and advertised the DVD's simoltaniously you could bring in younger fans of the show as well as give people like us our shows, because their never just going to do this out of the kindness of their hearts (if they have hearts). I showed a few episodes of The Adventures of Pete & Pete to these kids I babysit and they loved it so I'm pretty sure that would work. I'm actually concedering buying some of those old Nick VHS tapes since I'm desperate to see more of Clarissa (sad I know). I just want these shows to be released onto DVD more than anything else; the three out are great and I would love to see old Nick shorts/pormos on them as well. What happened I don't know, but hopefully they will be released eventually.

Dude, I couldn't have said it any better (actually I've probobly said it too much; see my million other posts on the thread). I was born in mid (August) 1991 and while I would give anything to have been born a few years earlier, I'm glad I was born when I was so I could see how awesome Nick was, even if it is vaguer than most. I agree, shows like Eureeka's Castle helped kids learn ans Clarissa Explains it All touched a few edgy subject as well. Now we have shows that make kids stupider and involves 12-year-old skanks and retards. Man, I watched Nick so much when I was a kid. In fact, the only thins I watched other than Nick were Fox Kids on Saturdays and Power Rangers during the week (I was obsessed with Goosebumps and Power Rangers), and occasionally Cartoon Network when they had something good/classic on. Looking at Nick now is depressing, but at least Kenan & Kel and (good) All That are on The N now; if only thay would air Clarissa and Pete & Pete like in 2003....

What I seriously can't get over is that Nick pulled the best movie they could have possibly made in 2005 by doing Nickelodon Rewind. Not only were they RELEASING our shows on DVD, but they had a block of television on the network (as well as cool merchendice) that aired their classic shows on the network. But what the hell happened? No more merch, the blocked has been axed, and the DVD's have been put off indeffinately (leaving Clarissa Explaind it All and Pete & Pete, probobly my two favorite Nick shows, unfinished). Why? No reason. Nickeldeon is just gay and dosen't want to make money by actually doing something nice by giving we the people our cheriched memories as well as an outlit to show today's generation how good Nickelodeon was originally. I showed some kids I babysit Pete & Pete last month and they loved it (of course Artie may have had something to do with that). I just want the DVD's to continue...I want a real Alex Mack DVD('s) as well as American Are You Afraid of the Dark? discs with extras. I'd rather not buy them otherwise because importing AYAOTD? is $35 per import and Alex Mack was a bare-bones Jessica Alba cash-in; needless to say real Nick DVD's would have a few good extras and stuff. Sorry if I rant like this, but it's annoying....I'm seriously going to get some of the Clarissa VHS tapes because I'm desperate to see some of the later episodes again. Yes I am pathetic but it was a great show.

No they don't. Nick 2 is 100% identicle to normal Nockelodeon, only 3 hours behind. Nicktoons used to be great, even if they did only air the cartoons. BUt now it's terrible and just about as bad as normal nick. The only redeeming quality is that they will air shows like Ren & Stimpy, Hey Arnold, Rocko, etc. on occasion. A Channel called Nick GAS used to exist and it was great. They would air ALL the old game shows and one year aired Salute Your Shorts. But one by one shows started disappearing, and they last two or three years of it's activity it only aired lke 6 different shows at the same time every day. It was anothing channel and has since been replaced with a 24-hour version of The N, which does air All That and Kenan & Kel on occasion when they aren't showing Degrassi.

theroyallibrarian-

Oh my god, preschool shows used to be great too! It's unbelievable how shows could be good for most any audiance, now they all suck. I found an episode of Eureeka's Castle the other day and geeked out; it was awesome, had great animation (I love muppets and clay!), and was actually a good show. Deffinately a favorite. I've seen/remember/agree with all of the shows you mentioned on that list. Just sucks though; Nick was there, they were doing everything perfectly, then they just dropped everything. I would kill for the Rewind Collection to continue. If they advertised the DVD's and aired the shows they would attract for of an audiance, including kids (their original target audiance).

Someone here posted a hyperlink to Viacom's consmer-contact. I wrote a letter explaining how the Rewind DVD's could sell more and that I would wish for them to continue. I doubt they will even look at it but maybe if multiple people keep doing it something may come of it.
