You Know You're a 90s kid if . . .

I have been looking all over for this post, but I can't find it anywhere--I responded to it, and I tried looking at all my previous posts, but it's not there!!! So, whoever DID start this post before, don't get upset at me.

Now, you know you're a 90s kid if . . .

You would play outside in the backyard until it was too dark to see anymore

You would tie towels on your neck and play superheroes

You would beg your parents to enter you in those Nickelodeon sweepstakes (Super Toy Run, Nick Takes Over Your School . . .) 'Course, I couldn't, b/c my aunt worked at Nickelodeon

You would have your birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese, when it was actually cool enough to still go! Now it is lame!!! (Well, last time I went there, it was 2000)

You would play Super Nintendo, or Playstation, or if you're lucky enough, NES, for hours, and try and get to another world in Mario Bros.

You would spend your afternoons after school watching Power Rangers, or Disney Afternoon

You'd make your own "Stick Stickley." (I tried that!!!) and you would always sing along to "Write to Me, Stick Stickley, P.O. Box . . .)

You'd watch "Nick in the Afternoon" in the summer

You'd buy every single "Super Soaker" squirt gun that came out. (Are they discontinued now???)

Saturday nights would be devoted to SNICK--with Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa, All That and Roundhouse

You would make your own "Double Dare" obstacle course

You would dance to cassette tapes of "Doug and Gary." (I don't know if they were all across the country, (although they did make videotapes) but here in Rochester, NY they were a huge hit to us!) Now it's "Gary the Happy Pirate."

You would buy those "gel" sneakers

Feel Free to Add More. I can't think of anymore!!!!!!

i loved boby's world, and beetle borgs

reply

so true. it's so funny how we all connect. i first thought iwas the wierdo who always watched the power rangers and goosebumps after school. nice times....nowadays, kids are all mature, too fancy for the old styles of playing tag and stuff. these days, every little kid is into electronics and manual labor in general is too out of style. anyway, does anyone remember watching "amercia's fuuniest home video" wtih bob sagget?

reply

OMG! I did! I wanted to send in a vid so badly, but my parents wouldn't lemme.

Also, little kids nowadays have it too easy with movies. They just hafta pop in a DVD while we hadda wait for a tape to rewind, but tapes have better commercials. For example, I recently found my Snow White tape and it had the coolest old Pocahontas teaser, which brings up another thing: our movies weren't all stupid rehashed over and over again CGI, but things that were real good. All I can say is we in general were kids in a better time, when TV and movies were actually good and my parents wouldn't buy me a set of Power Wheels.

I found the Fountain of Youth! It's the toilet!

reply

definatly better commercials i member my dinosaurs tape had the best pizza hut commercial where all the little league teams would go to pizza hut even tho they lost. dinosaurs was a great shot btw im the baby gotta love me lol

reply

bob saget is a beast his stand up is awesome although somewat disturbing

reply

Oh god, the nostalgia. I've done so many of those things. I still have my old VHS tapes in a cupboard somewhere. Every now and then I might watch one and I smile at osome of the old commercials.

Whenever you walk past trashcans you start banging on them and singing "Banging on a Trashcan...strumming on a streetlight.."

ive been singin tht in my head all day im tryin 2 find a video on the web of it but so far no luck

You'd watch Pokemon before you went to school in the morning.

You'd quickly go home to watch some Power Rangers while grabbing a snack, sit on the couch, and enjoy the show.

You'd collect Pokemon cards.

You wouldn't use a computer as often as you did now.

You weren't depressed.

You'd think school was fun.

You'd dress up as a Disney character for Halloween.

You'd watch Doug.

You'd listen to Hootie and the Blowfish.

You'd watch Space Ghost: Coast to Coast at midnight on Saturday's.

More to come!

Hootie and the Blowfish!! whoohooo!
Let's not forget All4One, Boys II Men, Babyface and the great Whitney Housten. In the 90s all these guys were on top.

anyways, how come kids these days don't GO OUTSIDE anymore?? Do they even know how to play tag?
I was talking to my cousin's kid and I mentioned "Freeze tag" or "candle tag" or something and I swear the kid thought I was talking about a video game.

Now I hear there's some school in Florida I think that's BANNED tag! what the *beep*? Is this the same country I grew up in? What's happened?

in kids defense i just wanted to say that i used to do volunteer work on mondays for kids of mostly single mothers and though video games were actually played there that kids and parents insisted that i brought over there, mostly kids played frisbees (those cool frisbees with the hole in it i think us bank gives sometimes at stands) jump ropes hula hoops all kinds of cool kids stuff.

about the banning tag thing, aside from technology rising as much as it has we have the problem that now-a-days people will sue for anything. back in the day people used to shower after p.e. but now that people are afraid of being sued it's no longer required. a lot has changed but there are still kids that play though perhaps quite a bit less.

these two kid brothers i knew wanted to kill each other and fight in a pool for about 2 or 3 hours while their mom left me to go get pizza. i was exhausted and finally we got bored and sat beside the pool waiting for her. i got a really bad sunburn on my shoulders. she was a single mom that wanted a brief vacation. at the time the kids were 7 and 10.

oh one more thing to the poster who talked about bobby's world i actually named our black cat bobby after the cartoon and he ended up being a stray runaway cat after eating our outside food less and less. i adored that cartoon. :)

reply

Totally. And you could feel the vibes of Y2K, and maybe still know people who fell for all that, and when the "Internet" was harder to get around with.

Plus, they made shows for kids that weren't just good, they were top-notch.

I fel the same way! I'm 20 (almost 21) and every few months I suffer from extreme nostalgia. I'll watch my DVDs of the Adventures of Pete and Pete and my Disney movies and get all emotional about how things were better in the 90's. It was a much simpler time and was only a decade ago. Now everybody has a cell phone, and the entire world is connected through the internet. I remember having to use dial-up! I look at kids' shows today and I get depressed because I know it's only going to get worse. And I want to be able to raise my kids someday in an environment similar to the one I grew up in. I'm seriously tempted to not even have cable or satellite when I have my own home someday. I can just raise my kids with my favorite kids shows on DVD, provided they all get released. So far all I have is Pete and Pete and Season 3 has been post-poned indefinitely. I want to have the following series on dvd: Salute your Shorts, Hey Dude, Clarrissa Explains it all, Secret World of Alex Mack, Home Improvement, Doug (pre-disney), Rugrats (pre-new characters), Ahh! Real Monsters, Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Rocko's Modern Life, and maybe Fresh Prince and Full House. These are the main shows I grew up with. I'd love to be able to share them with my kids someday, but unfortunately, most of those shows aren't available on DVD, and most will probably never be. I'm still determined to keep all my 90's keepsakes around however, to pass on to my children.

Odd how MacTonight was aimed at adults, yet kids knew and loved him. Heck, it is weird how we mention we used to see morning tv shows with primetime tv show like nothing, and back then they really tried to be their own thing apart.

Guess there really are people who act worse than 12 year olds.
