Why did Clarissa dislike Ferguson so much?

It was always amusing to watch Clarissa and Ferguson battle it out, but Ferguson did not seem that bad.
He kind of reminded me of a younger version of Alex from Family Ties.

Yeah he really does have a Carlton/Alex thing going on. I think he was more on Carlton level would get on people nervous with his wisdom and Alex was the same way too I forgot Alex was a genius to. I don't know why Clarissa disliked him so much maybe because he was annoying, I thought was cute how Ferguson would call her "sis" instead of a bad name like she did him.

Well in the pilot episode Ferguson did bring Clarissa's training bra to school for show and tell.

They were designed to be opposites. Shes this genuine, artistic free-spirit and hes the obnoxious self-important young republican

This is the true answer.
I would say that Clarissa was free-spirited like their father and Ferguson was conservative like their mother.

As I recall, I think he was set up to be her constant foil on the show. That, and he was snotty know-it-all that was constantly trying to prove himself at her expense. It was an ongoing feud they had. Clarissa even went so far as to claim that it started the moment Ferguson came home from the hospital, and her favorite nickname for him was "Ferg-breath."
