What happened?

What happened? When did Bastian turn into this blonde, hunky teenager? When did Attryu get a very heavy tan? When did the Rock-biter get a squeaky voice? When did the Childlike Emperess curl her hair? When did the Ivory Tower turn into some 80's Duran Duran album cover? Did I pass out for a hundred years? Is everyone in Fantasia on drugs? Are we on drugs? God what happened? OH GOD WHAT HAPPENED?!

Your initial post on this thread cracked me up, and is so true. I haven't seen this flick in a long time, but having loved the first one, I'd looked forward to seeing the sequel.

It doesn't quite draw you in like the first, and has so many discrepancies from the original that it doesn't quite work. I do like the ending where Bastian wishes the soreceress/queen/whatever had a heart, and that's how he "wins."

Still, probably wasn't a good idea to make a lackluster sequel to a movie that is so close to the hearts of its fans.

reply

Its more like a remake of The Neverending story with a different story. Its a futuristic sequal. Its scary. Its runined. I think I've made myself clear.

I kind of find this comment funny, being one of the ignorant americans. Lord of the Rings is actually 3 movies. And it isnt really just one long story either. But since that isnt what this board is about, i just wanted to quote some ignorant foreigner saying something like "Read before making a fool of urselves!"

reply

The fact that we all called this a sequal is pretty irelavent. (sorry if thats misspelled but after all, I am an ignorant american) it doesn't change the fact that the charactors and all of the surroundings were drastically changed and altered. Forget that its a sequal or a continuation, it still ruined the franchise.

OK, the MOVIE was made to be a SEQUEL to the ORIGINAL movie. I know that both movies were from the same book, but the people here aren't complaining about the book, they're complaining about the second movie in this trilogy, also known as a SEQUEL. So 'scuse us for being "ignorant americans" but it isn't our nationalities that make us ignorant, its that fact that we JUDGE people (that was supposed to be a HINT, but I'm assuming you got that since you're not one of us "ignorant americans").

And by the way, I totally agree that the second movie (cough cough sequel cough cough) was so much worse than the first. The thing that bugs me the most about it is Falkor's eyes. In the first movie they were pretty brown, like a puppy's eyes. In the second they were blood red. Is Falkor supposed to be evil or something?

Dude, the proof is in the pudding. We all make mistakes (2 is right next to 3 on the keyboard), just admit it and move on.

Back on track, I guess I'm the only one who actually likes the sequel. It is no where near as good as the original, but I still love to watch it. Maybe it's Nimbly?

Ok, I was wrong. There, happy now? You have to admit that your wording was a little off. I guess all of us "Ignorant Americans" thought you were using Lord of the Rings as an example, and we were simply mistaken.

BTW, I am a 37 yr. old smartass kid. I take no offense, bro, just don't fly off the handles at everyone.

I am done with all of the IMDB forums. When you have 5 year olds and people just wanting to start flame wars posting, that's going a little too far. Not to mention being insulted because I'm an American. There are some really thought-provoking questions and comments from some users, but I just get feed up with all the "bad and mean" threads much like this one has turned into. They far out-weigh the good threads.

Maybe if they moderated these threads somewhat, there would be less of a problem.

reply

I'll start with saying I'm french, so, my english... erh...
Hm, i agree with the beginning and the end of this thread. First, Schuwawerpserxech's (is it Austrian ?) post ripped my pants in pieces, as it was both very funny and accurate. Neverending 2 has anyway one good point : it pushes you to watch the prequel, sequel, erh whatsoever the other one. I mean, NeverEnding Story 1. Come on, you understood.
And I also totally agree with peterParker, whom side I join against people like raven. Ignoring that Neverending 2 isn't a sequel isn't enough, for me, to make a whole people ignorant. Even americans. And yet, I'm french !
BTW, i ignored that too, so I guess all frenchies are now ignorants. I hope my fellow countrymen will forgive me.
You seem to have a very narrow vision of things over the world, which is sad. Not to insult you, raven, but your post simply deserves silence. Yeah, i understand the paradox of this very post. So...
Clic !

Raven... this is exactly cut an dpaste what you wrote

neverending story 2 isnt a sequel. The original book written by Michael Ende is about the 2 movies; just like Lord of the Rings it was such a long story that they divided it in 2 movies. Read before making a fool of urselves!

how in the hell are we supposed to think that you are not talking about the lord of the rings when you say "just like the lord of the rings it was such a long story they divided it into 2 movies." Not even the smartest person in THE WORLD would know that you were referring to Neverending story instead of LOTR. Your grammar makes zero sense and your comparison sucks. Who the hell do you think you are anyway to come on here and call people stupid when you obviously can't even make a fair comparison. Unbelievable. Anthing that has three movies in a sequence are called the original, the sequel, and then when the third comes out it is now called a trilogy. So no matter what you are wrong. And I must say it feels good to be right. Power to the BRILLIANT Americans.

But whatever, I didn't come here to argue with you, I came to talk about these movies. Somehow you misunderstood that as a direct insult to you so you felt the need to defend yourself. Well you did I guess. But rather poorly because it was the same thing you've brought up with everyone else.

Just because you're on a computer, what makes you think people will respect you if you type like a moron? Or maybe you failed first grade English class so you feel like you have to simplify your writing/typing.

Using that method of typing makes you yourself look like a kid because it's not propor English. I can guarantee you right here an now that everyone who meets you on the net will not show you any sign of respect if you type like a lazy ass. Unless they themselves are bad spellers. Proof of this can be found by everyone elses comments to you on this thread alone.

And don't even bother to speak to me about intellect until you can use the English language the way it was MEANT to be used. I suggest you go back to school and actually pay attention to what you're teacher is telling you. Also try to pick up some common sence. It'll go a long way.

On the subject of the movies at hand, I'm beggining to wonder if they even exist anymore. All the stores and video rentals either don't carry any copies of either the first or the second, or the person I ask is too young to know what the hell I'm even talking about.

Lol I loved the first post because thoses are the same question I was asking myself.
I remember watching this film in the cinema in 1990/1991 I was 9 and taught it was ok but as an adult I just saw it again yesterday on tv and I realised just how much inferior this film is compare to its prequel, actually I taught it was a bit creepy.
The palace was weird it was full of people who looked like they came from cirque du soleil and they kept dancing for no reason.
The fact that I knew the young actors who played bastian killed himself made watching this film a little bittersweet.
The changes were so big that I taught it was distracting.
The big bird guy was so scary , I cant beleive I didnt get nightmare from watching this film as a kid.
Well to make a long story short , I agree with the original poster , this film's a bit of a failure in my opinion.

reply

[deleted]

It seems to me that anyone can completely bash a movie when they go into it with a biased attitude. The second movie is a departure from the first, but at least there is a little continuity that eventually is lost between two and three. I personally saw the second one first, I was about six at the time, and it quickly became one of my favorite movies. When I learned there was a first movie it made it all the more exciting. Even though the story is skewed a bit and there are casting and location changes, you just need to take them with a grain of salt. Both are good movies, they are whimsical, enchanting, and a release. The Ivory Tower to my recollection looks about the same in both movies, Silver City is too cool, and Xayide is not so bad. At least Auryn and the book remain the same, I think something is lost when those change, the movies, despite feeling different are connected, one who sees the first movie second has an easier time seeing that.

reply

[deleted]

I first saw the movies when I was a kid, and I just remember loving both of them. I haven't seen either of them in years though (oh, but I did see the third and it was painful to watch..haha, we should tie Raven down and make her watch it for the rest of time) but I still list the two of them as my favorite movies.

I guess if you look at the second movie as a sequel to the first, I can understand why people were disapointed. I remember watching and thinking "Hum, Bastian sure looks diffrent. And I don't remember his dad looking like that"
Whatever, I still enjoy both films, they're an important part of my childhood. I remember begging my dad for parts 3 and 4 and 5 and so on, cause I really thought that the story never ended. I was like, 6 ok!

Money is the ONLY reason why this film was ever made. I doubt the filmmakers cared at all about the source material and just looking to make a quick buck. Sequels are a best bet and how about one for a highly popular and well received fantasy film? You get the movie title, add the IT child actor at the time (I guess they couldn't afford Macauley Culkin), add some cheap special effects, and you have a HIT!

Everyone, I think we should give a round of applause to raven363. He has made a very valuable point - just as Europeans shouldn't judge Americans by what Hollywood puts out sometimes, so shouldn't Americans judge us Europeans by the likes of raven - stupidity and ignorance do not have a nationality.

I agree that the sequel should not have been made and was only a milking-the-cow trick. Despite that, it doesn't do any harm as it cannot erase my memories from the original, which is so deeply burned in my head it seems i was actually in Fantasia sometime in my not too distant childhood.

Next 'they'll' be telling us how Star Wars is only two movies ^_~

Anyway, i didn't really like NESII and thats why i'm here originally. My personal opinion was (apart from the effects being very dated now) the acting was very wooden. To the point i just wasn't drawn in by it. Plus the ending sequence of the ivory tower, kinda looked like a 80's pop video ^_^

reply

I've only just come across this thread. I can't believe it's gone on so long.

In defense of Raven363, I don't agree with his comment about Americans being ignorant but none of you who were stung into responding by his barbed comment have done yourself any favours by attacking him on his grammar which is correct, if a little ambiguous.

It is quite clear to anyone with a correct grasp of English that the film Never Ending Story 2 is the subject of the sentence and therefore the "it" to which he refers when he says that "it was divided into two parts". "Lord of the Rings" is a referent object introduced for comparison purposes and as such its work is done by the time the pronoun "it" is introduced to the sentence.

The poster who suggested he should have put a comma after Lord of the Rings is wrong as this would make the sentence grammatically incorrect and have broken its flow.

A better construction would have been "just like Lord of the Rings it was a long story, so they divided it into 2 movies". The meaning of this sentence is clearer, although not much more grammatically correct than the original. I have only changed two words in the construction; that to so (because that could not be used after a comma and the comma allows division of the sentence into two clauses, each with its own referent meaning) and in to into. However even without this, the meaning was quite clear to me, if lacking elegance.

The problem is that people on these forums tend to type just as they would speak. Contextual meanings which are obvious in the spoken word are not so obvious in the written word.

I think those who chose to misunderstand are simply being obtuse, i.e. deliberately misconstruing the meaning in order to avail themselves of a platform for conflict.

I sympathise with the offended Americans but you won't defeat prejudice by simply shouting it down with your own.

You should all grow up a bit really.

Ok.. ignoring the bickering..

I agree.. what did happen.. sure I hate the orignial too.. but this one.. it's unforgivable.. what the hell is with the chicken guy? why is armaganth never explained? why is the desert of manycolours just sorta.. randomly there for like.. one scene.. with no explaination.. and why on earth was Xaide made into a major villian?
Her role in the second half of the book is far more sinister.. manipulating the nieve and arrogant bastian to her own ends.. and he doesn't defeat her.. she's trampled to death by her own minions.. for reasons that noone knows. presumably she willed it (seriously.. read the book.. it says that)

some aspects of the book are there.. in the barest detail. it's a travesty... an aweful mockery of a wonderful story.. avoid this film at all costs people.. spend your cash on the book instead

Haha...well, I didn't expect this incredibly long thread when I decided to post a comment about NEII...haha. I just don't know if it is worth it anymore. I lost my thought in all the Raven nonsense :-p

I would be so impressed if I get a response from Raven...that shows true devotion and tenacity kid :-p

raven,

So maybe your statement did make sense to some, it was still confusing.

but even ignoring that.

you can't compare the making of one book into two movies (never ending story I and II) and making 3 books into three movies (the fellowship of the ring, the two towers, and the return of the king)

its a completely different concept.

I know you live for the pissing off people. you love to see how angry you can make people just by saying the same things over and over again on the internet.

well, you've accomplished that much, congrats.

and as for calling people kids... I don't think that age really matters in regard to intelligence. to a certain extent it does. but just because someone is in their 20's or 30's or older doesn't necessarily make them intelligent.

well I, unlike you raven, will waste no more time on this stupid thread.
I will not be back, I will not check to see if you called me a kid or not.

I am seventeen years old, I live in the united states.

there are some who call me... Tim

No, you're wrong. Lord of the Rings was indeed originally 1 book, but was divided into 3 books by Tolkien's PUBLISHER because it was far less costly to release 3 books systematically than to bind all that paper, buy the ink and print out 1 massive book and just HOPE it sold well enough to cover the costs.

Ironically, it was the unauthorized re-publishings of LOTR by pirates that got the books popular in the US.

haha. okay, so i came back.

raven,

I didn't know that about lotr. In order for me to have read it 10-20 years ago I would have had to have been between the ages of -3 to 7. I don't know many 7 year olds who read books that long. But you're right, I'm not a true fan of lotr. Nor am i a true fan of the movie that this thread is based upon, since i haven't read the book either.

i admit that i do believe that you know what you're talking about. and its dumb how offended everyone got by being called ignorant. As Americans we should be able to take a little bit of crap from other countries.

but seriousuly raven... thank you for actually answering back with something more than your normal response, i really do appreciate that.

I'm not really sure what happened. I went from thinking you were some stupid guy, to hating you, and then to having a lot of respect for you.

Uh oh, I'm back! It's been about a year since I last spoke to Raven, and I can't believe he's still here! I find that amazing! But I have to congratulate Raven for his persistence on trying to piss everyone off, which I think he's done a pretty good job of. Not that I think it's right or anything.

You really have no life, do you, Raven? It's sad, really. I do feel sorry for you. If you ask mummy and daddy nicely they might actually decided to give their deprived, immature little child some lessons in manners and respect. That's if you haven't got a memory like a goldfish, like you have proved by repeating yourself over and over.

But that's just my thought on you.

So I just got through half of the the posts of this argument.....and well, I noticed the date was 2004 - So, I scroll to the bottom and it is now 2005 and STILL GOING - Raven and all who want to say things to him like me. Just everyone, Can't we get back to the point?!?!? Talking about the movie - Oh, Raven...this is coming from a 17 year old "kid" - Ironic...
Save the internet arguments - To Call a form of people ignorant is......Ignorant. No set of people is higher than the other. Just because America has Hollywood doesn't mean Japan can't make better horror movies. It just happens to be the case that they do. We all are PEOPLE - who share the same love for an art. FILM. What everyone was mad about is change of characters/actors. It always upsets people. I always use this example. "Think if they changed the actor of Gandolf in Lord of the Rings" (How appropriate) You would be like "WHAAAAAAAAAAT?" - So yes, back to the basic form people - You don't even need to retaliate to what I've said Raven, or point out my flaws. Let's just talk about the story or use of lighting - You feel me on this? Can I get an Amen?
