Hellraiser: Inferno
Exorcist: Legion
some parts of Event Horizon

I think Inferno's closest psychologically but I'm prepared to be told I'm wrong...

...and maybe Polanski's Ninth Gate

A film called Sublime 2007. Very similar.

reply

Really? Nobody thought of Shutter Island?

PTSD? Flashbacks/ Dreams/ Dead wife and Kids/ Government hiding the truth/ impossible to prove/ automatically looking crazy?

reply

zomg YES! Shutter Island like JL is one movie I remember I started watching at like 11pm at home with the lights off... and it was a trippy and unsettling experience. Like good thriller/horror films should be :)

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

I didn't know that this story was ever (directly) adapted to film.

In any case, good list. Some more along the same lines (probably already mentioned by others) are

Zentropa (aka Europa)
Naked Lunch
Videodrome
Barton Fink
The Hour of the Wolf
Fear X

I am amazed nobody has yet mentioned:
The Changeling (dir: Peter Medak). At or near the top of many "scariest films of all time" lists, with good reason. A masterpiece.

Paperhouse (1988). Not consistently scary, but intensely weird and genuinely frightening the few times it tries to be. Visually astonishing - the modern answer to...

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1919). Not scary, but a classic, landmark visuals and some similar themes to Jacob's Ladder.

And then of course there's David Lynch, but we all know about him.

Some good picks here. Definitely some of Cronenberg's films.

I don't know if somebody suggested these already but "U-turn" and "After hours" remind me of movies like this.

Sorry if there are duplicates:

Let Me In
The Mothman Prophecies
Insidious
What Lies Beneath
The Jacket
The Exorcist III
The Vanishing
Devil
The Uninvited
The Forgotten
Cold Creek Manor
White Noise
Exorcist II: The Heretic
The Amityville Horror (2005)
The Unborn

Not mentioned on here yet, but similar in the sense that the parpicipants think they are being shown a warning, when they are, in fact, already dead and in hell:

Tales from the Crypt (1972)
