Sofia Coppola or Winona Ryder?

We know that Coppola originally wanted to cast Winona as the daughter, but she couldn't do it because she was busy with Edward Scissorhands. And we all know that Sofia was simply a bad case of nepotism, as her terrible acting was the one big dent in an otherwise, in my opinion, excellent film. But the more I watch it, the more I think Winona would have been a mistake too. I mean, her acting would have been better, but I just don't think she'd have had the right look and style for the picture.

I feel that Ryder would have been better but only marginally so, which isn't saying much. I don't if Jennifer Connelly was ever even considered but I feel that she would have been absolutely perfect. Marissa Tomei also would have been a much better choice than Coppola or Ryder. The casting overall was pretty bad and is arguably what most hurts the film in my opinion.

One suggestion that I just read elsewhere Laura San Giacomo, who could've been great at playing the character as she was originally written (sexy, rebellious) and was Italian to boot.

If Wynona was Mary it still wouldn't have saved the movie. The plot was its biggest drawback.

I think the The Coppola kid pretty good playing the spoiled brat daddies girl

Winona Ryder is hotter than Sofia Coppola but she doesn't look like the hot Italian cousin that has a crush on you.
