She seems like a girl who pretends to be a 12 year old boy with that haircut and neighborhood kid getup that she wears.

I also noticed a lack of family around them, making me think that she had been ostracized by her family for looking like a boy.

She was wearing Sam's shirts a couple times in the film after he died, if that's what you mean by "neighborhood kid getup."

I think OP has a problem with women with short hair. Fortunately, Moore's pretty enough to pull that look off and I think she looked very good in this film.

That type of short Louise Brooks style bob was 'in' back in the early 90s, and although it tended on balance to suit Black women best (e.g. Halle Berry), Demi Moore looked great with that look.

There was even a satirical 'study' of how Demi Moore's 90s movies' box-office profits were inversely proportional to the length of her hair, meaning that whenever her hair was short, as it is in Ghost, A Few Good Men, and Indecent Proposal, she tended to have a bigger hit movie.
