Did anybody actually see this in a theater?

If so what did you think when you walked out? Anybody else in the theater besides you?

Yes and I remember specifically because there was a story attached. My family and I had travelled to Tasmania for a holiday and I celebrated my 16th birthday there. We were in the city of Launceston and Dad said I could choose a movie to go and watch and being a Madonna fan of course I chose this. So Dad bought tickets for the whole family and gave them to me to hold on to while we went and had a Chinese meal before the film started. Somehow I managed to lose the tickets on the way to or from the restaurant. Suffice to say Dad had steam coming from his ears and I think it being my birthday was the only thing that saved me getting a smack around the head (this was back in the day when that wasn’t an uncommon punishment if you fucked up!). Anyway he begrudgingly bought 5 more tickets and we saw the film. After the movie I did feel bad because, well, it’s not exactly a masterpiece 😂 Dad, to his credit, didn’t make a big deal about it at the time but later he loved to bring it up and give me crap about it being the most he ever paid to watch a shit film. God I miss that man. Anyway that’s my Dick Tracy story, sorry for epic reply ☺️

I don't know what to write honestly.

That's fantastic...a great memory:)

I wish I had my father with me as well.

nice story.

I did. My friend and I were talking afterwards and I commented that it was very cartoony, which got both of us laughing since it's based off a cartoon.

Yes I did, it was just the summer after Batman and it was obviously like a follow up to that (Elfman score, retro 30s pulp noir setting) I remember wanting to love it like batman but it was like too much like comic book/cartoon to truly love it, but did think it was interesting and strange with all the make ups and colours and matte painting

I also saw it with my dad and I think he thought the same .. weird but pretty good and obviously an attempt to 'do a batman' (of course he was aware of Warren Beatty and Pacino who I dont think id even seen or heard of before this. and I think I remember him saying something about Madonna either she was good or terrible in it I can't remember which!) .. fortunately I didn't lose the tickets beforehand and thus avoided my fathers wrath! (unlike the dude above 😄)

Back then I was abit of a movie memorabilia hoarder getting the movie magazine, comic, novel etc to films I liked and I liked this enough to buy the novel with my pocket money (but I remember there was a comic adaptation done in the style of the old DT comic strips that I recall deliberating over but ultimately didn't buy, also I think there was a Panini sticker album but don't think I bothered to get either, and there was an official making of book I remember flicking through each time I went in WH Smith but never bought - unlike the Batman making of book and all the batman stuff id got the previous summer) I was also collecting movie poster postcards and think I got the various DT ones. & recall there were poster advertisements for DT in the pages of the Star Trek DC comics I was getting back then. and now i think about it i might have had a DT mug too..

I remember when I went back to school which movies wed seen over summer came up like BTTF3, Gremlins 2 etc (we were all abit too young for the really cool stuff like Total Recall, Die Hard/Robocop 2) I asked if anyone had seen Dick Tracy only to be met with 'Dick Tracy?! OMG! hes seen Dick Tracy! bahaha!' (obviously wasn't cool enough for them and further damaged my already beyond repair reputation! but i didnt really care then or now lol)

What a fantastic post!

BTTF3, Gremlins 2 and Dick Tracy all in the same building! And sharing the screen on the same day!

1990 was so underrated!

Yep, I saw it with a bunch of friends. I think out of the whole group, I was the one who liked the movie the most, in fact I loved it, and still do. And maybe I'm easily fooled, but I didn't know who The Blank was until the mask was taken off at the very end, whereas the others in my party were able to work it out pretty early.

reply

I saw it twice.

Once in a packed cinema, when it first came out.

I loved it, and got the Dick Tracy hat, and started getting the comics and figurines and cards etc.

Then I saw it a second time with a friend weeks later.

The cinema was nearly empty, and I was wondering why the audience wasn't reacting to the jokes and things the way the other audience did.

I was a bit bored, but I thought it was because I had only recently seen it.

But then my friend turned to me and said, THIS MOVIE IS SO BORING!

We didn't walk out, but that's when I sensed others might not be as into this movie as me.

That said, I remain a fan of both Dick Tracy and the movie!

reply

Oh yeah, fun movie, great characters. The toys were well done too

Criticism was much less back then, you went to the movies for fun.

reply

I did. I was 15. I didn't know you could walk out of movies back then. I did not like it.
