What does Richard get of his marriage?

I don't think he gets one moment's enjoyment from being around Hyacinth. I would imagine that even in the bedroom life is a chore if anything happens at all. He is a Protestant but perhaps he is a big believer in Matthew who talks about divorce in a negative light.

reply

Who the hell knows why he stayed!

Maybe he talked to a lawyer in the past and found out how much it'd cost him to divorce a dependent wife, maybe he couldn't face dating again at his age, maybe he was brought up to believe that divorce was wrong, maybe Hyacinth looked just lilke his mother and he couldn't conceive of standing up to a mommy substutute, maybe he maybe he thought that coming home to a clean house and a home-cooked meal was a better deal than cleaning his own home and cooking his own food. Maybe he just couldn't face coming home to an empty flat every night, and spending every evening at the pub rather than being alone.

Or maybe the marriage just had the strongest plot armor in the history of the universe.

Most likely paying a personal penance that would guarantee a good afterlife. Now why does Elizabeth and Emmett keep showing up for coffee? Has anybody gone toe to toe over the name of Bucket with Hyacinth?

reply

Elizabeth is a bit afraid of Hyacinth, wouldn't say "no" to her for a million pounds!

Not sure about Emmett, but Elizabeth is there out of a combination of genuine niceness, because she knows Hyacinth needs a friend, and because she doesn't want an enemy like Hyacinth next door. Hyacinth is a steamroller in a floral dress, you don't want to be on her bad side...

reply

If I was in her shoes I would just up and move away. The show seems to imply that the area is fairly nice and the people are well mannered in general. Could not do much worse than Hyacinth. Perhaps Elizabeth feels that Richard is the good neighbor that would be very difficult to duplicate elsewhere. She seems to get along well in the community church.

reply

You get weird neighbors wherever you go, if Elizabeth moved away to get away from Hyacinth she might find herself next door to a crack house or someone whose teenager has started a garage band.

Hyacinth is at least quiet and respectable, and offers quite a lot of entertainment value.

reply

In that community a crack house seems quite improbable. Also, I suspect that any community laws such as what pertains to noise are strictly followed. Now where Onslow lives I would imagine that all sorts of issues exist with neighbors with law enforcement no where to be found. I would think that Elizabeth could move to the other side of that community and be fine. She probably knows all the stores that Hyacinth goes to in order to avoid her. Church would be a problem. A new church most likely.

They don't call her "The Bucket Woman" for nothing, if you catch my drift ;)

reply

Please explain. The only thing I can think of is a bucket of crud.
