What kind of parents do you think Hyacinth and Richard were?

This has been briefly mentioned in another post.

What kind of upbringing do you think Sheridan had?

I can imagine Hyacinth being loving but very overbearing in trying to control Sheridan's life. I think he would have been pushed towards certain people to be friends with and told how to act properly in school.

I think they would have made nice parents though. I think Hyacinth would have nurtured Sheridan's love of needlework and art and i honestly think she would not mind him being gay at all. She has never struck me as the homophobic type at all.

What's your opinion, would you have survived growing up with Hyacinth?

I think the fact that he never shows up at their house, and that the only time he calls is when he needs money tells you everything about the upbringing he had.

'You tell 'em I'M coming...and hell's coming with me, you hear?'

That's a fair point actually

Hyacinth I imagine was over fussy and cossetting, Richard passive and letting Hyacinth have her way as usual. Hyacinth is the kind of woman who in the past used to be thought to cause homosexuality in their sons through being over protective, over affectionate and clingy etc.

It might tell all that every time there is a visitor to the house out come the family photo album and when they are away for the weekend at a country inn, out come the concertina photo wallet all full of Sheridan, boring people into a comatose state. She seemed to be overbearing and very protective towards him. I always had a laugh when she would quiz him about how he is spending all this money he continually asks for. "You're not getting mixed up with unsavoury girls, are you?" Which we think it's a hoot because he reassures her that he and his "flat mate" are out buying material for curtains. "Oh, that's all right then" - pure gold.

I doubt if she realised that he was gay

reply

It is unclear if she just didn't get it or if she was in denial.

The show was done in a time where it was believed that too much mothering would make a kid gay.

I imagine she would have sent poor Sheridan off to the local council school in short pants and a little blazer with the insignia of a better school over the heart, and the other kids beat the shit out of him.

She probably loved Sheridan and expressed it as well as she could, but she was also absolutely blind to his needs, particularly those needs that involved being in touch with reality. If he'd ask for a dirt bike, she'd buy him a croquet set, and his schoolmates would beat the shit out of him as soon as they saw it.
