Let's make a list of every movie a retro gamer should watch

So far, I think all retro gamers should have watched:
The Wizard (of course)
Super Mario Bros.

Anyone else like to add one?

reply

All the wonderful Uwe Boll movies! Or not...

Anyways, if one can include tv series I would say Captain N, great campiness.

could someone with the time sum up the ones we have?

reply

1. super mario bros.
2. the wizard
3. wargames
4. joysticks
5. double dragon
6. transformers (1986)
7. street fighter
8. GI joe the movie
9. i dont know but maybe mortal kombat might be one

i guess thats it.

reply

I've still gotta see Street Fighter and Double Dragon.

reply

What about....gulp....Little Nemo the dream Master?

"Who dares mention Donald's Pizza Heaven...without mentioning their delicious curly fries!"

reply

Legend (1985) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089469/ Shigeru Miyamoto has cited it as one of the things that inspired him to make The Legend of Zelda.

reply

I can not quite comprehend what is going on here. you are all repeating cloak and dagger and war games like nobody else said it

Well either they're agreeing with the posters before them or haven't seen the posts before them... Either way, the original poster should update his "List" as more posts are made!

Let me add....

The Lawnmower Man! ;)

and take off the list Streetfighter (the Jean Claude Van Damme version)- it's a list of movies a retro gamer should watch, not just a list of movies about retro games!

It's a short indie film thats actually an episode of a series...but it really could be a stand alone movie.

reply

There is definitely a decent amount of them, so I'm just gonna mention everything that I have personally seen (in no particular order)...

Films based off of the video game industry (in general or in part):
- The Wizard
- Stay Alive
- Grandma's Boy

Films specifically based off of video games:
- Resident Evil (trilogy) and Resident Evil: Degeneration
- Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
- Street Fighter, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and Street Fighter II: V (miniseries)
- Super Mario Bros.
- Double Dragon
- House of the Dead
- Alone in the Dark 1&2
- BloodRayne (soon to be a trilogy, LOL!)
- Doom
- Little Nemo: The Dream Master

... and that's all I can think of right now.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" trilogy and "TMNT" could also be another one - but it's mainly based on the comic books, not the video games - but I thought I'd just mention it. (There's a lot more as well!)

I'll definitely try to check out some of the ones you guys have mentioned!

Thanks,
Mike Sorge

And to add - Electric Dreams and Max Headroom (TV series).

reply

If you're also going to add TV series, you have to put:

1. Captain N
2. Legend of Zelda

Classics, and really fun to go back and watch again!

reply

Although I was only mentioning films, TV series are also a very important form of video game-related classic-ness, LOL!

Here's all of the ones I can think of:
- The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- The Legend of Zelda (from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!)
- Captain N: The Game Master
- Captain N & the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
- Captain N and the New Super Mario World
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
- Mega Man
- Mega Man Battle Network/Rockman EXE
- Earthworm Jim
- Donkey Kong Country

I'd assume that's not all of them, but those are pretty much the main ones anyway...
If anyone can think of any I've missed, I'd REALLY appreciate it! (I'm in the process of collecting all of the DVD sets!)

Thanks,
Mike Sorge

reply

You forgot ReBoot (1994). 

Klytus, I'm bored. What play thing can you offer me today?

reply

Death Wish 3, the greatest non-video game video game movie ever!

reply

Don't know if they've been listed, but: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Wreck-It Ralph

reply

Thank you, I was getting angry at their lack of inclusion so far in this list. Wreck it Ralph for SURE.

reply

reply

The Fantastic World of DC Collins
D.A.R.R.Y.L.

reply

Yeah, everyone got em listed I'd say:

The King of Kong
Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade
Cloak and Dagger
The Matrix
Virtuosity
WarGames
Reign Over Me (shouldn't really be on the list though)

Also not movies but I love watching videos from Retrowaretv.com they have great shows like Game Chasers which is like American Pickers for video games, and Run! Play! Think! and the Lazy Game Reviewer!

The Angry Video Game Nerd and PAT the NES Punk also are good reviewers.

reply

I'd like to third (or fourth?) The King of Kong. It's marketed as a documentary, but it was edited for drama, so you could essentially call it a movie. And it's a fascinating one.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

reply

for me it is:

Predator (you know that Nintendo turned this into a *beep* game0
Terminator/Terminator 2
Alien/Aliens/Alien3
Batman
Ghostbusters
ET

reply

Sheesh, I can't believe I first posted in this thread 7 years ago. In fact, I didn't even remember posting in it at all. Time sure does fly.

Anyway, I actually came here to post a similar question, but in an effort to avoid redundancy, I'll put it in here. What films can you recall where the original NES is featured in some form or another? The only other film besides The Wizard that I could think of was 1991's Cool as Ice (I know. I know) where the younger brother is briefly shown playing his NES. Got any others?

Surf Ninjas. The little brother had a magic Game Gear!

reply

One of the Freddy movies I think

reply

I love the movie Presumed Innocent with Harrison Ford and even though it wasn't featured in it there is a scene when he goes to his son's room to talk to him about his trial and in the back ground you can see an old TV with a NES on the shelf below it. That was the era I grew up in so when I see that scene it immediately makes me want to play some games on my NES. Lol it does it every time

My list:

1. Tron
2. The Wizard
3. The Last Starfighter
4. WarGames
5. Lifeforce
6. Mortal Kombat
7. Super Mario Bros.
8. Cloak and Dagger
9. Street Fighter
10. Double Dragon
