hey does anybody know if this one was a good version or it's not that good!pleese let me know if the 1989 version of phantom of the opera was really that good or not!it looks interesting and if it's one of englund's best horror movies after the nightmare on elm street movies!because i seen this one on channel 50 UPN chicago back in 1997 sometime back then.it came on like two times they'd only been airing this version like two times on television back then.
I just watched this version. For me, it was a good movie. I am a fan of Englund and his horror movies. This version of POTO is wonderfully gory, if you're into that.
I sort of like it. It's not overly gory (the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies are way gorier than this), which for me is a good thing as I'm really not into gory movies. Robert Englund is great as The Phantom, but he's not a romantic character like he is in the musical, so you're not going to fall in love with him in this movie.
I think it's difficult to say whether or not this is RE's best performance after Freddy Krueger, as his version of The Phantom does share many similarities with Freddy.
However, IMO the storyline makes no sense. Watch it and you'll see why. But it's still a good, underrated version of the story.
IMO, the plot for the planned-but-never-produced sequel sounds like a really good idea.

I like the film, it's very underrated and Robert is terrific as usual. The film was just marketed badly because it showed his burn look which resembled his Freddy Krueger one Kevin Yagher also applied in the first 3 Nightmare on Elm Street sequels and people probably thought it was "Freddy of the Opera."
IMO it's a very good film and a great adaptation. I really liked Robert Englund's performance, he is way more than just Freddy Krueger. The music, production design and cinematography are also great. This film has a really good atmosphere. Too bad this movie and Englund are very underrated!
