Favorite scene?

I just watched the movie, and I just encountered one of the funniest scenes in movie history! @ 1:01:56, the hotel guy (the one in the uniform, with that stupid hat, which makes him look like a "damn mosquito-legged chimpanzee"), so that guy just smashes down on the plastic fly with that fly-swatter. That was so random, I can't help but laugh... You must check out that scene, it's hilarious!!!

Feel free to add your favorite scenes from the movie by the way...

yeah this movie has been one of my favs for the past 10 years , screamin jay hawkins and cinq lee were great ...."you gonna eat that plum?" "I ain't gonna eat that" then jay eats it , great stuff ! all their scenes are really good !

reply

it's even funnier that he pretty much devours the plum whole.

reply

ha i don't know, steve buscemi sliding around in the back of the truck with a bullet in his thigh was pretty priceless

reply

How about when Youki Kudoh says, "Hello, we are looking for most cheap room please, do you have?" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins says, "All our rooms are the same prices." and she responds, "I'm sorry, that is too expensive." That's a good one.

hey....yea....so i watched the movie today....im trying to see everything from Jarmusch....nearly there...

my favourite scene is when Screamin' Jay Hawkins ask to the bellboy > *say it, you any more of those japanese plums or any other extic fruits from around the globe?

And the lost in space dialogue is great as well....

cheers

that exotic fruits line is my favorite too.

Luisa talking on the phone in the airport as if her husband hadn't just died.

"Memphis does look like Yokohama. Just more space. If you took away sixty percent of the buildings in Yokohama, it would look like this."

"was that a gun?"
"probably, this is America."

the scene where the bellboy goes up to check the room where the gunshot comes from, and how everyone just stares at each other in disbelief before he runs off.

There are a number of really good stand out scenes and some great dialogue. The funny moments really standing out (in a good way). One good scene that hasnt been mentioned yet but is one of my favourites is....

Johnny: Don't call me Elvis! If you can't use my proper name, why don't you try "Carl Perkins, Jr." or something? I mean, I don't call them "Sam & Dave", do I?
Dave: Hey, man. My name is Dave.

reply

damn, i was going to mention that too! i also like the scene where the japanese couple are at Sun Studios.

"the cow is laughing because it's really a bull, enjoy your wang cheese, suckers!"

reply

I thought Will's rant on how much he hates Lost in Space was funnt as hell.

"Attention all you self-pretentious pretty boys, there's a lot more of us ugly mother f uckers out there so watch out!"

the fly swatter scene was probably my favorite... i enjoyed everything with the japanese kids and the 2 guys at the hotel... the rest of it didn't do much for me...

reply

The funniest scene for me personally was definitely Buscemi, Avides and Strummer walking into the hotel room being totally drunk. I just couldn't stop laughing.

As a 30-year resident of Memphis, I gotta say this entire movie is my favorite scene. Much of the downtown area it shows is gone now, having been demolished or "tidied up" to make way for the Redbirds stadium or other recent so-called improvements.

As a rabid T-shirt collector, I adore the scene where the Japanese girl refuses to give up any shirts and puts on 5 or 6 at once--in Memphis summer weather!--so she won't have to leave any behind. And anyone who lives in Memphis will appreciate the "Tri-State Defender" line--can't get a true picture of local events from just The Commercial Appeal, y'know.

The Memphis airport still looks as it did when this was filmed, BTW.

Although there are several I quote as catchphrases, my favorite line has got to be "Man, you got a curse on you, sure as the moon rolls around the world."

I miss Rufus Thomas very much, god rest his soul.

Can any Memphis residents or visitors say whether the Arcade Restaurant is gone, too?

It's still here. It even has a webpage:

The entire scene with Rick Aviles, Steve Buscemi, and the late great Joe Strummer in the hotel room was incredibly funny, especially when Strummer says "What's the Lost in Space show?" Just the way he says it is hilarious.

when the japanese couple are walkin through memphis, and he sees a cadillac.."ooh...cadarac" i say the same thing every time i see a pre '65 caddy
when she sees buscemi outside his shop w/ fishin pole..."fish?"

i love the scene in sun studio when the tour guide makes them get in line before she can start and they just take a step back. and then the way they all slowly move along as she does her routine.

also, the scene when the bellhop puts on his shades, looks at jay, and then takes em off.

i pretty much found everything the bellhop did to be hilarious. he was just so perfectly awkward.
it's hard to believe spike lee is so much more famous than his little bro cinque.

My favorite seen was at the beginning of the movie, when the Asian couple was at the Memphis train station, and the Asian guy started comparing it to their home in Japan. The conversation went something like this.

Asian girl: I like the Memphis train station.
Asian guy: I like the Yokohama train station better. It's more modern.
Asian girl: I like the Memphis train station. It is more classical and traditional. The atmosphere is peaceful.
Asian guy: I like the Yokohama train station better. The atmosphere is modern.
