"That's for blasphemy"

One fact that I learned from The Last Crusade was that uttering the name of Christ in vain warrants punishment before extramarital intercourse with attractive Austrians.

reply

That's Christianity 101.

Kind of ironic, considering how much swearing both he and Indy did, and the fact that they didn't really seem like very devout Christians in the story.

reply

Why would they? It had already been demonstrated that Judaism and Hinduism were true.

reply

Indy is best characterized as an agnostic atheist, I think. Even though he witnesses religious miracles, he shows up a skeptic in the next movie.

His father is a believing Christian, considering the slap and his obsession with the Holy Grail. Albeit he is "as human as the next man".

reply

Agnostic atheism is typically the scientific view to religion and most things in general: don’t accept something until it’s been demonstrated and don’t rule something out until it has been debunked

reply

Agreed, and I would say it suits Indiana as a scientist.

reply

Agnostic theist would be a more accurate label. Indy knows from both prior films that multiple gods seem to exist. In Raiders he tells Marion to keep her eyes shut, because he knows there's supernatural forces at work. In Temple he even invokes the name of Shiva.

reply

If you say so, I don't feel inclined to object.

Well, in reference to faith (Christianity in this particular case), he says to Donovan in The Last Crusade that he had heard that bedtime story before about the cup of Christ. That is after the event where he called on Shiva. So he is still not impressed, it seems.

reply

When did Henry Sr. swear?

reply

I'd have to re-watch the movie.

reply

Swearing and blasphemy are worlds apart. To be honest, I'm not sure if swearing is even a sin in Christianity. It seems that swearing is a possible interpretation of Ephesians 4:29 which addresses "corrupting talk." I think that's open to interpretation. Anyway, the idea of sex out of wedlock seems to be addressed more directly as sinful.

Disclaimer: I'm a non-theist.

One of the 10 Commandments specifically states not to take the Lord's name in vain, which includes using His or his Son's names as a cuss word. There are also many parts of the Bible that encourage people to speak in ways pleasing to God, and cussing, whether it's taking the Lord's name in vain or not, is still not okay.

reply

I agree Americangirl. I tolerate it in movies but don't like to see it in my everyday life. I had to unfriend some people on facebook for cussing too much.

When I was little, I remember asking mom why grown-ups said bad words. She said that it was because they were angry and didn't always think when they were talking.

I had jobs in both daycare and doctor's offices, and in both, I was super-careful to keep my language clean. I can't always do that at home, but home is private.
