My research has revealed that 1989 is firmly within the "late 1980s/early 1990s" chronological period.

Actually, the water effects for the Pseudopod, the probes, and the water being pulled away in that room Ed Harris was taken to look pretty damned good for the time period. Now the aliens, I agree, look like puppets, but if you don't look closely, they can be very graceful for puppets.
