Mario and Tiffani's tributes are thoughtful but sort of generic. Mark Paul's surprised me. "True comedic genius" are words I never thought would be used to describe Screech, but I could definitely see it that way. Especially in the earlier seasons, Diamond did great work with that character. He had a lot of tools in his toolbox.
Anyway kudos to Mark Paul for the nice words in recognizing his colleague.
Years ago Dustin published a "tell all" book that was not flattering to his costars. Later on Dustin claimed that he never read it and that it was ghost written by someone else who made up stuff. The rest of the cast were P.O.ed at Dustin after the release of the book. So, I don't know if he made amends with anyone before he died. I did hear that Mario Lopez said some nice things about him, band was in contact with him before he died.
I feel bad for the other cast members on this one. Excuse me for speaking ill of the dead, but Dustin was known for being an asshole and a liar. Everyone that worked with him after SBTB would attest to that. And he never hesitated to take shots at his former castmates with stories that may or may not have been true. It's hard not to blame for not inviting him to any of the reunions or for the new show. Even if you forgive him for the book and everything else, he was just a nightmare to work with.
But now he dies tragically young, and you're forced to say nice things about him, even though we know you still hated him, because otherwise he would have been on the show. But you can't say nothing because that would make you a jerk as well.
Even if you forgive him for the book and everything else, he was just a nightmare to work with.
Well I did catch an interview with Mark Paul years back he did say that Dustin was not hard to work with. He said whatever was said after the show, whatever resentments happened after the show, was all after the show. He went on to say that he's worked with difficult people before and Dustin was not one of them.
Which leads me to believe had they signed him to appear on the show. I think the guys would have made it work. Whereas the girls clearly wanted no part of him
Yeah. That's something that was kind of a shame. Both on Good Morning Miss Bliss, and the first season of Saved by the Bell, Screech didn't act that annoying nor was his voice dumb sounding. But for whatever reason either Dustin Diamond himself or the writers and directors seemed to want him to change his voice from Season 2 onwards to sound dumber. And changed his character to be more dumb. Then on The college years and Saved by the Bell the New Class he became even more dumb.
I really don't get it myself. Instead of growing up like the rest of the characters he just became less mature as a character to the point where he's a grown man acting like an immature kid. It's baffling.
Having to play a really weird and goofy character sucks because it usually leads to the actor being typecast and unable to get decent roles after the show ends, like Urkel.
MY DAUGHTER AND I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE SERIES...I NEVER REALIZED IT BACK WHEN...BUT YEAH...ERIC TURNS INTO A CARTOON CHARACTER...THERE ARE SOME EPISODES WHERE OTHER CHARACTER TURN FULL CARTOON AS WELL...WEIRD TONE SHIFTS.
