Did people only watch this because internet porn wasn’t a thing at the time?

Seems like it to me

reply

Internet porn was definitely around in the mid 90s at least.

I genuinely liked some episodes. I was a kid when it was airing, and I actually didn't watch for the sexy ladies (and lads) at all.

reply

I remember it being pretty bad but every kid watched it regardless.

reply

Oh, for sure, many episodes were terrible, but still fun to watch. This wasn't an intellectual show, it was funny and goofy.

reply

I never watched it, but in hindsight, I like that it promoted a more 'wholesome' sexiness (or at least the earlier seasons did) than porn.

Believe it or not, not every guy is into porn. Some of us appreciate classically beautiful women (and men) without seeing them being demeaned and (literally) stripped of their dignity (not that I would ever judge a porn actor's choices).

From what I gather, later seasons dropped any pretence at story and characterisation, and became a revolving door of Playboy models to essentially flaunt their bodies, but it seems like the first few seasons genuinely balanced a semi-credible depiction of lifeguards with the more egregious eye-candy element, and the stunningly beautiful Erika Eleniak (for my money, the best-looking woman who appeared on that show) seemed to have an *actual* character to work with, befitting of a classically beautiful woman who also had a semi-decent film career (e.g. E.T., Under Siege, The Beverly Hillbillies and A Pyromaniac's Love Story, including many films that *didn't* require her to strip off her top), and was a proper actor and not simply a glamour model.

reply

Ironically, everyone had sex during filming.

Had this been known back in the nineties, the series would have lasted longer.

reply

You don´t think 11 years was long?

reply

I didn't say it was short, but at the same time...there have been shows which lasted longer.

I really enjoy this show. It's sexy and campy. Lot of fun. Kind of like Hercules and Xena. It's a reasonably good soap opera so all these lifeguards start to feel like your friends. Most of the montages are well done too. Who doesn't like a good montage?

reply

yeh it was basically a fun show. kids could watch it bc it was all colourful, innocent. simple storylines with superhero looking characters, and adult males bc of the insanley attractive women (esp Pam Anderson) running around in the red swimsuit. and i guess women could watch it for the hot guys?

similar to Adventures of Superman - kids and comic book nerds liked it bc it was superman. but the men would watch it bc of Teri Hatcher ( early 90s in UK on a saturday early evening - AoS on BBC and BW on ITV)

Not to mention fans who were gays and lesbians.

reply

No because there was no nudity on this show

reply

65% of viewers were female, with its number-one audience being women aged 18 to 34.

The show was, in my opinion, total garbage. God knows how it endured so long and was so successful. I actually liked the first season. But after that the acting was terrible and the plot lines were wafer thin.

I thought its popularity was because of CJ's tits. After finding out the fact above I am completely dumbfounded why it succeeded.

reply

It's a fun show and devoid of any political messaging. Men are Men and Women are Women. I always loved the montages
