Personally, when I first saw this scene, I really didn't even take it into consideration at all. When I saw it again sometime later, it still didn't bother me in any way.
Watching it today, it still doesn't. The only observation I've had about that scene today was "Oh, I guess the dad shaves down there." In more of a humorous way. Other than that, it's not a huge deal unless, like previously stated before, you're thinking of it in a sexual way already. Considering it's his kids, and it's pretty normal to bath with your children until a certain age, anyone thinking about this in a sexual way is pretty sick.
I agree, that s some weird a** s***. And noted,i m not an american, i m an european. And i still find it weird.
shareAnyone who thinks this is inappropriate or weird or whatever is a moron. Kids need to be taught how to bathe. It can be done with you sitting outside the bathtub and helping them, but it's a lot easier to do it yourself and show them how you do it. Especially if it's harmless and they're your own freakin children. People have nudity all wrong. Nudity doesn't always have to be a sexual thing, just cos your genitals are exposed. Even in the bath they're not really exposed.
shareWhat did you want him to do? Just leave the girls to drown in that big bath tub? Also, he needs to bathe too, so it was just like killing two birds with one stone.
What's the big deal? When I saw this first I was a little puzzled. But if this ok in Japan, so it's ok for a reason. Like many said, you expect him to leave his young daughters to drown? In Japan they are comfortable with nudity. In US we are comfortable with violence. Nudity doesn't always equal sex. I remember watching another anime movie Summer Wars. This lady with a baby sat in the middle of the floor and there were bunch of other family members surrounding her. She sat there breast-feeding her baby in front of everyone. Which I found interesting, because in America it's wrong. Another seance I recall from an anime movie. When about a 90 year old man was bathing with his grandchildren in a public bathhouse in Japan. So does that make him a pedo? Maybe somewhere else outside Japan. I didn't react negatively because it's normal in Japan. What about Grave of the Fireflies. The siblings were bathing naked in a bathtub! Why isn't that a bad thing! I mean he clearly has a sexual attractive towards his younger sister!! *sarcasm* I go to Korean spas all the time. In the bathhouse area people are naked but women and men are separate. Does that mean pedo men go to these spas to check out naked younger boys or something? Stupid western idiots -_-

I have shown this film many times to my pupils in anime club.
Every time silly comments follow in that scene in particular and I had to inerrupt the film a few times to explain the background.
But then some kids giggled at the scene when Mei finds Totoro's hideout and grabs him by the tail to climb onto his belly- I did not even get at first why they would find the scene funny in first place. For some obviously the scene had weird connotations.
I think because films are so over sexualised at present, kids pick up on really innocent scenes and see them as dirty. The fact that parents let them watch really inappropriate films for their age and then call out for censoring films like Totoro does not help.
In the beginning there was nothing, and it exploded.
I actually started wondering about that too at first. Then, as I began to think about it I realized when I was young I took baths with my mom all the damn time. I had completely forgot. When your that young it's completely innocent, and taboo means nothing to you. To a father it should also be innocent. If it's not then there's a problem. Also, their water came from a well, and was a much more limited resource compared to what you're probably accustomed to.
shareit wasn't so long ago that people still did that. me and my siblings used to. just grow up
