Why such a high score for this?

I'm as big a fan of Miyazaki as the next guy but an 8.1 seems way too high for this movie. Sure, it's cute & heartwarming, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it. There's no real sense of conflict & not everything is developed quite as well as it could have been. I've watched it twice recently & enjoyed it, but it was very unsatisfying compared with some of his others.

reply

I think it is so good precisely because there in no sense of conflict, the whole film is utterly enchanting.

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

reply

Yeah i dont really get why this film is rated so high.

There is no ending, no explanation to anything, no closure.

Just magical things happen because x

very weak ending.

Why does everything need to be explained to you? Did Stanley Kubrick explain anything in his movies? No. Do people think all of his films are masterpieces? Yes. People like you really need to get their heads outta their asses. People who are too stupid to realize that this is a perfect film.

reply

Well, aren't you full of yourself? No reasoning, no argumentation, just stating your oh-so-unquestionable opinion and insulting those who don't agree...

You don't get why it's rated high?

Because lots of people gave it a high score.

It's not rocket surgery!

The movie really doesn't go anywhere. And the kids can be really obnoxious.

The movie goes from Mother's sickness to health. And the kids are charming.

reply

Thank you. I was very excited for this movie and knowing it's rating I expected a lot. But it didn't live up to my expectations. The story went nowhere, there was constant yelling and screaming and there wasn't really a plot or a moral.

How many films like that have you ever seen? That's exactly the reason why it's a great film, it even deserves higher than 8.1.

Agreed. To some extent.

This is probably the most "childish" movie from Ghibli, and yet it is still considered one of their best work by a lot of people, myself included, so that has to count for something.

Again, I agree with you, it is a charming, "slice of life" movie.. There is no antagonist, but that doesn't mean there are no conflicts! My nephew (who watched with me) was really concerned about the mother.. and then Mei disappears, and that was really intense for him!

You're welcome to like any movie but Totoru is tailored for a certain viewer.

Again, I agree and disagree.. If you mean it's tailored for children, I'd say definitely. But it speaks universally to any and everyone.

Well, go tell that to my three year old son.
Let me know what does he answer.
This movie has such a high score because it's perfect.
Perfect.
Don't judge this under normal movie standards, they don't apply.
This is a masterpiece, a work of art (forget filmmakig).

It should have a 10 score.

Cheers.

reply

That catbus was what really sold this movie for me.

reply

Nice one.

reply

I don't believe it should be in the top 250. I think between a 7 and an 8 will do, maybe a high 7, like 7.7.

However, you have got to be crazy to think this movie deserves a 10 score. You anime people, I swear. You're just as bad as twilight fans.

reply

I gave it a 5, it wasnt anything special in the slightest.

reply

This was a 7 for me, I can understand the laid back lack of conflict but more Totoro magic or touch of suspense couldnt hurt

reply

compared to his other films, with 10 being max for them, the film felt more like a 7/10

sure it was "utterly enchanting" and what not but was there a real story line?? come on now folks.. the film felt like it was treading on water. It didn't really go anywhere in the end

reply

Another reason it should get a very high score, apart from the magic of the gentle story that has no conflict or hate in it, (well the neighbour's boy is a bit rude at first), is the incredible wealth of detail in the settings. The actual characters in Ghibli cartoons are nothing special but the settings are superb. The old Japanese buildings just reek of another era, one now quickly disappearing. This summer, we were lucky enough to visit a two hundred year old Japanese farmhouse and make rice straw sandals. Just watching the film you can smell the old tatami mats, feel the texture of the wooden window frames and look through that old fashioned window glass full of imperfections and ripples. The film perfectly evokes Japanese rural life in the late fifties/early sixties.
Simply wonderful.

Er...

What is that supposed to mean?
This IS a kids movie, remember?

reply

I am a 20 year old male and this is probably my favorite Miyazaki movie and one of my all time favorite movies in general. I think it should be at least a 9, I can see it not being a 10 for not having any real conflict, but the immersion into such a deep and rich universe is so gracefully done.

reply

well, aren't you the kid of somebody? Or did God sent you to earth? ;-)
Why is it a kids movie?
Because there is no violence in it? Because it is painted? Because there are kids in it? These are weak reasons.

reply

Do people really have to defend the point that this is a kids movie? Isn't it obvious enough? How about you tell us why it ISN'T a kids movie.

reply

I gave this movie a 9/10

My biggest problem with this movie was everything with the mother. For awhile I thought we were not even going to see her in this movie. Then when we do see her she doesn't seem that sick. Appearances can be deceiving so I let that slide.

But then the doctors panic over a cold. I would get it if she did seem sick then but again she's perfectly fine. When the cat bus brought the girls to the hospital I knew she would be okay but when they got there nothing was wrong with her at all.

Then the ending was anti-climatic. The mother coming to the family's new home wasn't even animated. It's kinda lame they did it in the credits. But that's just my opinion.

I was entertained by everything else. It wasn't perfect but I enjoyed watching it.

And when I think of a "kids movie" I think of a film that's dumb down and is something you'd enjoy a lot less later in life. I don't think this is that kind of movie, or at least it didn't feel like it.

reply

"It can't just be Totoro and Catbus lol. "

And I can't see why it cannot :)

It wouldn't be the first movie to be remembered almost solely for a few of its characters, would it?
To me, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (sorry for any potential mistypes) are mostly entertaining due to a charismatic Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow.
Offcourse, the adventures are entertaining and compelling aswell, but I don't think it's unlikely to say that the movies would be less known if it weren't for Jack Sparrow.

So, if PotC can, why not Totoro? :)

I think the problem when people say "There is no plot" isn't that there is no story, but rather "it's not a movie that fits a paradigm with which I am familiar." There is no big conflict, no exposition, no denoument -- none of the criteria which people mistakenly interpret to mean a good plot. Sure those things help, but sometimes all a movie needs is to exist and let the viewers observe.

This movie isn't about revealing a story with a sequential series of events, it's about taking us along and revealing the lives of a family and the world in which they live. Very simple and very well done. There are many facets to appreciate in the story if you know what you are witnessing. If you watch carefully when the girls first explore the house, you see the little sister following the big sister around -- doing the exact same thing but somehow different because she lacks the grace and control of her older sister.

We get to see the world through the eyes of a child, complete with beings which we know logically don't exist but to a child there is no thinking about such things because wonder simply exists. Life doesn't have to be big and outrageous, you just have to appreciate the world around you. Sometimes we forget that as we grow older and expect too much. For example, it's similar to wanting more from a movie because watching a quaint story doesn't appeal to your expectations.

True that, much of his other stuff blows this out of the water but the amazing thing is that this was still a great film despite being one of my least favorite of his.
