History Class

This film ought to be shown in history class.

I was fortunately enough to witness this film at an age where critical thinking will shape my understanding of fellow mankinds for eternality

Others should also have such oppertunity

There is no escaping reason, no denying purpose. To deny history is to deny the very meaning of our existence.

We just finished studying about segregation and the "Jim Crow South" about a month ago in my history class and my teacher recommended we watch MB. Although most kids in my class probably didn't care I'd like to get my hands on a copy.

HELLO,

WHAT THE *beep* ABOUT IT?

I didn´t realise this movie was about the sufferings of white people in S. Africa.

reply

[deleted]

Why don´t you stop shouting and go and make a movie about it Galves?

You sound like just the guy producers would trust with millions of $$$.

reply

[deleted]

Galves, you´re obviously a bit slow and sound like a tormented soul.

I didn´t say I didn´t care. I haven´t shown "pity" for anyone except you.

I asked you to stop shouting, something you seem incapable of.

Why don´t you take your message somewhere where it is relevant. Try any neo-nazi website/forum.

[deleted]

What is you´re problem?

Is it with me/the movie/peoples attitudes?

If you feel so passionate about this subject, then why don´t you write the script yourself, try to get it made and let the world know about this terrible injustice?

But abusing random strangers on a discussion board about a movie which deals with something entirely different isn´t going to convince anyone.

You might aswell be on the Schindler´s List board criticizing the movie because it fails to detail the sufferings of Christians in Saudi Arabia.

p.s. Stop shouting.

reply

[deleted]

Oh, you "talk loud" alright!

reply

"I DON'T GIVE A DAMN WHAT HAPPENED BACK IN THE EARLY 60S WITH A COUPLE OF WHITE AND BLACK BOYS"

Well why come on the message board of a film with that subject?

Are you here to teach us?

p.s. if you´d bothered to look at my original post in this thread you´d see that I didn´t agree with the original poster.

Galves - you said

ISN'T IT FUNNY THAT ALL MY POSTS HAVE BEEN DELETED BY IMDb ADMINISTRATORS?
OR IS IT THAT SOMEONE RESORTED TO A COWARD STRATEGY OF DENOUNCING "ABUSE".
OR MAYBE I AM RIGHT AND IMDb IS REALLY BIASED AGAINST WHITES!

You're on the wrong Board. Try "The Soapbox" under General Boards. Make your case and be appropriately angry there.
Belittling the subject of this film, and those discussing it, on this board, won't get you any friends here.

Are you the originator of uncle-maxy's quoting another's words, below ?
"I DON'T GIVE A DAMN WHAT HAPPENED BACK IN THE EARLY 60S WITH A COUPLE OF WHITE AND BLACK BOYS"

If so, why not ? That was one terrible example, out of millions, of the effects of racism. Another side of the same coin that you're attempting to publicise. Go do it elsewhere, you may find a home where your posts aren't deleted, if you stop shouting in upper case...

I watched it today in History.

reply

I watched it in history. And we talked about what was wrong with it, like he said the FBI didn't really care about going down there and that the FBI got the info by paying off a klansman, not talking to the wife.

We watches this in history class recently, not so much to for the FBI reasons of the story, but to give us an idea of how diffrent certain areas of even our own country was, it was used for more of an impact to show us how disgusting people were and can still be.

reply

Not only would this be a great film for a US History class, but for a sociology or psychology class as well. My sociology class is watching this to (obviously) study the degree of racial tension between African Americans and members of the Ku Klux Klan.

I don't think that we're *technically* allowed to watch the movie in school, but my teacher is a bit of a renegade...and isn't quite "there." Still, no complaints--it's a fantastic movie.

actually 7( may be off by 1 or 2) men were in 1967 and served terms ranging from 3-10 years. though that was not nearly enough for the crimes they commited, it was the best you could get against Klan Members at the time in that location. the Sheriff(Stucky in the movie, i believe Raines in reality) was acquitted,

but killen was finally charged and recieved 3 consecutive 20 year sentences last fall.

English. For yr 9's in Australia. I find it funny that the people in my class are saying how racist the Americans were (which is true) but are blinded to the fact that Australians had the same beliefs towards Aboriginals and Asian people. Well they're only 14/15 but still.

reply

Not History, check out about the COINTELPRO. The FBI wasnt simply "lacking motivation" to protect blacks, they were and are to this very day actively engaged in the oppression of blacks pride movements. In fact there is no good film to show about this period or even this matter. PErhaps "Do the Right thing" where the cops come in, kill a black, hence provoking a riot and leave immediately afterwards. That is much closer to the truth than this propagandistic re-telling of the FBI trying to find a killer they hired themselves.

reply

In Australia we watched this film as part of our yr 10 english topic on conflict.
Whilst it is a good film, some historical facts or opinions need checked before people go putting them into films.

reply

We had to watch this film for history class, I just finished watching it right now actually. Very good movie, solid story, engaging pace, and an important message, but you guys already know that lol.

It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.

Im in Australia and year 10 too ... and we just watched it in English as well, a unit on Prejudice. We have also read and view To Kill A Mockingbird which i think provides a more balanced perspective on the people; not portraying the whole town as racist.

reply

I accually first watched this whole movie in my government class.

reply

OMG-I watched this for my year 10 english as well! and read to kill a mockingbird(and watched it) AND im from Aus too hmm..........

I'm a senior in a high school US Government Class and we just had a unit on Civil Rights. My teacher is playing this movie for us and we're in the process of watching it right now. From my view point I think that it is already a good movie. It's message and it's purpose seem very clear to me, though it might be different to a lot of other people.

I'm from a small almost unheard of mostly white California town, so I never have experienced racism and violence at just about any level. This movie is great for people like me because I want to learn and be educated and not be just another white person that cares nothing about what happened during the Civil Rights Era. I agree with many people who've posted that say that it should be shown in history class.

reply

We just finished watching this in my history class. I agree that it should be shown in classes.

reply

We did too. I thought it wasn't going to really be influential to some people in my class seeing as I live in the south, but there was not one dry eye in the class.

reply

Just be aware, out there in California - race relations are also about connections to Hispanic/, Latino/, Asian Americans, as well as Black/White relations. If you want an interesting documentary on racial segregation in southern CA, try to find a copy of "The Lemon Grove Incident."

reply

i am 14 and in the 8th grade. we are studying about this time in period and civil rights and injustice for blacks in the US and so on. we began watching it today, but only got through about 10 minutes of it. we will spend the next 2 days in class watching it; so its being shown for history in my part of the world.

reply

I'm in 7th grade, and we have to read The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963

And in order to understand the "project" she is assigning, we have to watch the movie... without even watching the movie, just hearing about this tragic story is so sad
