Susan Sarandon ruined this movie

I like minor league baseball so I wanted to see a good minor league baseball movie where I get to know a lot about the players. I did not get that with this movie what I got was old bag Susan Sarandon running around being annoying in almost every scene fighting over 2 guys. I didn't get to know enough about all the other players on the team. Instead the movie focuses way too much on baseball groupie whores. Maybe women want to see this but as a guy I want to see more baseball and less about the sex. Its also never explained why a 20 yr old baseball player is so interested in screwing a 40 yr old woman. I never understood why Nuke was so infatuated with Annie. Why would he lust after an average looking older woman when he could have all the hot younger sluts like the one he had in the locker room at the beginning. This all should have been minimized anyway because like I said I wanted to see more of the baseball and less sex stuff.

I thought Susan Sarandon did a great job in this movie. The older woman with the bobbie socks and Keds sneakers looked really cute.

I like Susan Sarandon. I love baseball. Gotta say, Annie Savoy totally ruined the movie for me. Shame, that, because it could have been great. At best, it is simply pretty good and is made that way by the Annie Savoy character. Can't really say another actress could have improved the film, because the character is so generally loathsome.

SS ruins any film she's in. But for a real freakshow, she's now almost 60 and hitting on a 35 year old man on Rescue Me. Making this big speech about how he hasn't lived, just having sex with young women, that she's the best...God i had to cover my eyes and chant til the scene was over.

The whole groupie thing doesn't work. Pro athletes have groupies because they make tons of money. Minor league ballplayers dont, and they made a good deal less in the 80's.

Big John, you have no idea.
I broadcast minor league baseball for 5 years and these minor leaguers had groupies. A lot of these local town hoochies would hook up with players thinking that they'll be set when the guy makes millions in the majors. The players just look at these golddiggers as a piece of tail.
So yes, minor leaguers have groupies.
As far as the movie goes, I loved "Bull Durham." Very realistic except for the scene with Nook banging Millie in the locker room before his debut. That wouldn't happen. Afterwards, somewhere else, yes.
By the way, "Candlesticks make a good gift."

^You're right, I had no idea.

Maybe her character needed a few more pills and little less booze to help her find a happy zone.

I worked for one of the teams shown in the film when it came out. The studio did "premiers" for the players and stadium employees in each city in the league. There were several things we all agreed on that we both liked, and didn't like, about the film; but the one that was pretty universal was that SS was too old to be a groupie even then. And while minor league players don't make what major league guys do, they aren't doing too poorly.

reply

SS was a gnarly old hag. Not her fault. They should've cast someone ten years younger for the role.

Also what's up with Crash still wanting to get with her after he knows she was getting railed by Nuke all summer, and by some other young buck every summer before that for years and years?

btw it's "Nuke" as in nuclear, not "Nook" like some here have spelled it.

I'm with the original poster on this one! Susan Sarandon is a very unattractive woman. I'm a big fan of baseball movies and I still like a lot of things about this one. Costner gave the best performance of his career. This was before his started taking himself so seriously. But I'm still disturbed by Sarandon's homely face and bulgy eyes. I was afraid to look at other actresses who were considered for this role. Kim Bassinger would've been great!

Oh, well, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder I suppose...

Idiot. If you knew anything about baseball you would know there is more sex in baseball than baseball. Baseball is groupies, hookers, call girls, rabid female fans, sleeping with an umpires wife to get even with him. Read Ball four, read any good book about baseball and you will realize baseball players are not milk drinking Christians but whiskey drinking horn dogs. Susan Sarandon was just what she was suppose to be a baseball groupie. My dad played 12 years of minor league baseball.
