10 years on from the release, it was attaining true classic status.

rotj didn't seem so current in 1987 to me, it almost seemed corny. i think at that point i felt better movies would keep coming along. i don't think droids and ewoks did much to help (even though i'm a big droids fan).

A lot of people would have seen ROTJ for the first time well after its initial release. It's one of those big movies which motivates people to show it to their kids and friends, etc, especially when ANH and TESB came before it and made people do the same. It is still happening today.

That's probably because Return of the Jedi first came to home video on vhs in 1986.
