This Would Never Happen in Real Life

Okay so I'm a teenage girl and can I just say (and I'm positive all the guys will agree with me) the absolute stupidity and unrealistic plot of what this film is. And I feel horribly for saying that because I'm a huge John Hughes teen '80s film fan but it's the truth.

This movie was stupid and it sucked.

I know for a fact a guy will not (never, really) kiss a girl he just considers his best friend or even just a friend because it's plain awkward and weird especially when the girl asks the guy to kiss her for just practice like what Watts did to Keith.

Keith spent all that money and time worshiping this one girl, Amanda, he claimed to be so madly in love with but by the end of the film just by one little flashback of just a kiss, nothing else and all of sudden he "falls in love" with his best friend. No, that never happens. He never stated feelings for Watts and she was never present about her feelings, and when a girl isn't present about her feelings to a guy she's crushing on or if that said guy already knows but is not interested in her he is not going to suddenly fall head over heels in love with the girl once he realizes she was in love with him the whole time.

Geez, this plot was worse than a Disney prince/princess movie when it comes to love.

And the other thing that entirely pissed me off was Keith spent all his college money, HIS COLLEGE MONEY, on earrings for a girl. Now like I said I'm a girl but if I was in love with a guy I barely knew I wouldn't spend my college money on him for some vain, useless gift. Guy or Girl, no smart sane person would, and that whole spiel Keith gave to his father about spending all his college money and telling his dad he knows what he was doing and his dad just walks out and how Keith doesn't want to go to college. That was such BS. It was. No parent would take that and just go along with what their kid said. Unless you are a freaking talented rock star you have to go to college in order to make a living for yourself. Keith's dad should have kicked his ass for doing such a stupid thing.

I disagree.
He didn't just like her as a friend, so that kind of discredits that argument. He loved her, but was just to infatuated with the perfect popular girl.
My personal experience as a teen totally counters what you just said as well. My best friend and I don't harbor feelings for each other but we were each others first kiss and it partly had to do with the fact that we knew each other and were comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Plus I don't know how you can say nothing ever happens when you're only one person. There are 9 billion people on this planet, never is big word.
Either way I saw lots of little moments that led to this.
When he defended her when that guy (who ultimately became his friend) tried to touch her. When they were in the club, when they were laying on the bed and he said "you always hurt the ones you love," when they kissed. There were tons of moments where you could see he truly liked her. But as we all know infatuation and determination can sometimes over rule these feelings. He was set on getting the girl and beating the bully, and after he did that he had nothing else to go after. He achieved all he wanted to do. I think that whole date, which was not great IMHO showed him how much him and Amanda weren't for each other, and probably felt a lot different than a certain someone he was always with..
When he walked outside, and was finally at peace with everything, he saw Watts. Clarity tends to come at these times, and you could just see by the look in her eyes that she was distraught. Plus Amanda's urge to go on and get her obviously helped solidify these feelings.
So yeah I think they showed affection towards each other a lot, and she was extremely obvious with her feelings. I mean the random flirting with that guy in front of him, the obscure comments about loving someone, the blushing and the kiss which she suggested, the attitude while driving them around on their date, and most importantly the scene at the club where she said he was one of the most important things in the world to him.
Lastly, I always assumed it was HIS cash, seeing how he had a job and yes you can make a living without college. Look at the thousands of famous writers, musicians, and ARTIST, that did so. College is a path that is put in our head since we're young, and it isn't for everyone, namely me.

I agree with ringurl ... in real life ... this does not happen, no matter how deep your connection is with your best guy friend ... he does not just fall in love with you, only because you fell in love with him ...
I had this once ... and even I am so sweet and caring and funny and smart and pretty ... he just does not fall in love with me and it sucks!

but movies are like that ... showing us something that would be wonderful if it happened in real life ...

Of course it's not realistic, it's a teen movie in the 80's. Get over yourself.

I kinda agree with you - I still don't fully understand the plot and the actions after all these years, but this movie is still one of my favourites ever due mainly to the sharp dialogue and catchy music.

So Keith thinks Amanda is only going out with him so that he will go back to Hardy's and get beaten up. So he does it anyway, spends loads of money on a car and earrings and stuff and that everything will be good. Not something I would have done in my youth.

Still a great film though!
Cheers,

he was stupid for spending that money on a date, just to prove himself. even though he didn't wanna go to college, that money might come in handy someday.
