It starts with Murphy getting his hand blown off with a shotgun, followed by maybe the most over-the-top shooting scene I've ever seen, and its been along time since 1987. I can't remember how many shots were fired, but just wow, with evil grins, lol.

Exactly, and there are many other obscure movies that could make the claim of having the most violent scene ever. See Romano Scavolini's Nightmare-81', there is a shocker of a double murder scene that tops anything Maniac has or Robocop.

those SAW etc movies arnt movies though , they are just a series of scenes of people being mutilated. Anyone who enjoys them should be put on a list and banned from owning a gun, for starters!

This movie was anything but wussy. For it's time, it was the most graphically violent film ever. Also, there was barely anything cut out of the X-rated version anyhow. Just a slightly longer scene of Kenny getting shot by ED 209 and a quick shot of Murphy's arm being blown off.
shareThe theatrical cut pretty much pushed the R rating as far as it would go. And the only reason they trimmed down the violence was because most theaters wouldn’t show an X-rated film meaning the film would have been doomed from the start.

When I first saw that scene on the Criterion Collection DVD I felt physically ill. It was really hard to watch. It still is, but at least I'm prepared for it.

It is not a bloody scene; but what I find quite disturbing and violent in it's execution, is when Murphy has been ordered to be killed and he is repeatedly blasted by his fellow cops in the underground carpark, and you can see how much he is struggling to survive. Murphy had just been attacked by ED-209 after just confronting Jones about his vile corruption and criminal behavior, and it was this scene that made me think about Murphy\Robocop being the best kind of cop. He had a fearlessness that came with his cyborg nature and knew how to get the villains; but he also still had humanity and a vulnerability within his metallic being. I think this is a credit to Verhoeven and Weller, that this was able to shine through.
As for the scene you have commented on, there are 2 cuts. The original theatrical version had been heavily edited of violence to receive a US 'R' rating. It is not half as graphic as the director's cut. I am assuming the dc cut is the one you saw?

Although for 'most violent' I'd have to go with the uncut version of Murphy's death, I agree with everything you said about the carpark scene. It's a fantastic moment for the character. Despite his armour, it still makes him feel vulnerable and like a hero struggling against the odds to survive. This is where modern action/super-hero movies fail.
Robocop, even with his strength and armour, was still the beaten-down underdog that you want to see get back up and defeat the villains.

Exactly! Murphy wasn't just a by the numbers character and the film had a smarter and sharper tone to it's satire than most superhero movies today.

cant really remember it! i remember the initial murder at the start , and the carpark robo vs 40cops battle , and the ed209 demo shooting . All i remmebr about this battle is the ED209 discovering stairs for the first time bit - so cute!

The most unrealistic part is that Murphy doesn't just drop dead after taking the first shotgun shell to his heart. But then the scene of course wouldn't have been nearly as brutal.

shareHe had heavy body armor on so the first couple/several shots wouldn't even have gone through the vest, also the human body can take a lot more damage than you realize.
