How Much Of This Movie Couldn't Happen Today?

I'm just thinking given this movie will be 30 years old next year, there is so much of it that wouldn't be the case these days.

1. They wouldn't be building a sub that big in the first place because we wouldn't be worried about the Russians. Maybe China or North Korea, but definitely not the old USSR.

2. Pretty much any data request done on a computer could be found in ten minutes by someone being paid $35K a year.

3. They would have had Susan Atwell's last known locations triangulated by satcom and traffic cam.

4. Tom's DNA? Not a problem. He'd be nailed for nailing her.

5. The two 'bookmarks' would have been far more subtle in getting to Nina if they needed to be.

But look on the bright side: the background music would be so less annoying. I swear, that alone almost ruins the movie.

They didn't have all the traffic cams in the 80's.
What I found super implausible was them finding the one sailboat rental place in Annapolis that they rented the boat from.

reply

Oops. Ignore the part about the traffic cams.

A Russian plant in the U.S. government; more relevant than ever, going by the election.

No need to find payphones or other phones. Could have phoned up Iman to tell her to hide from the guys and avoided two huge chase scenes.

The PC Police would never allow the villain, Scott, to be portrayed as homosexual.

True, and this is why I watch older movies (before 2010). When the plot was the most important thing, and everything (characters, casting, direction) was in service of the plot. And ironically, the characters (gay, straight, black, white, male, female) rang more true because of that.

I think the last decent year for film was 2015. Everything since then has been trash, just on the scale from low-grade trash (TOP GUN MAVERICK, GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE, DUNE PART 1 & 2, etc) to pure trash (MADAME WEB, CAPTAIN MARVEL, etc).

reply

Correct except for Top Gun Maverick. That film is awesome.

reply

I tried watching it and couldn't get more than a quarter through before giving up. Ditto for Dune. So it's a nope for me.

reply

It’s totally non-woke and has an excellent character driven plot, it’s a great sequel and the mindblowing flying stunts were done for real.

I think you need to give it another try.

reply

I'll try again, but usually when I'm turned off by the first 25% of a movie, it doesn't get better (for me, at least).

reply

Movies do seem to have got shitter in the last decade or so , but I dont think its got anything to do with the color or sexuality of the protagonists

Watched No Way Out the other week. A bit ridiculous but intriguing.

The ending reveal............dumb.

Gene Hackman didn't have much to do, but was OK. Hackman says "Nucular" as he does in Superman 4.

Costner wasn't that good. He did fine but not enough for me to see his path of being the biggest star in Hollywood.

Will Patton was the stand-out and stole the movie IMHO. His performance was the best.
