was Alex really pregnant???

Or was she making it up?

reply

Why do people think Alex is lying when she not only tells Dan to call the gyno...he does call & the doctor says Yes!
Even back then, Dan could easily find out if Alex had given him a fake (or friend's) number! Its obvious she was really pregnant.

As to not being Dan's, I think people are reading way too much into a film than what's there.
The film clearly indicates Alex was obsessed with Dan, and no hint of another relationship is mentioned.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

I could not agree more and I think that it's a huge misunderstanding of the plot/ the point of the movie to even suspect Alex would be lying. Her total obsession with Dan leads up to her devestating actions and plans for revenge, which would make no sense if she had made it up or was seeing other men. I find that the script does everything in order for the audience to believe in her - well I do 100%.

The even bigger question is why did Dan ignore basic common sense and not wear a condom? What a schmuck!

Also how many affairs did he actually get away with? It seemed like this is something that was not new to him, he took it pretty casually.

reply

Alex asks Dan that very question why he didn't take precautions himself and if memory serves me right he was very surprised to be confronted with that and answers very vaquely that he just assumed she used something. Dan clearly takes it for granted that the responsibility is hers and certainly not his. I think he was selfish and you may be right about previous infidelity on Dan's part.

Thank you.

I think Dan was such a moron thinking he could just cheat on his wife with no condom and get away with it.

I think he is the type who probably did this kind of thing before and was surprised that he would ever get caught.

reply

I don't think Dan had cheated before. He appeared VERY unsure of his sexual prowess. When Alex remarks upon how fantastic he'd been in bed he murmered "Oh, thank God" as though he was doubting his prowess. He was evidently new to cheating - you could see him fumbling over his words at the restaurant previously. He lacked sexual confidence outside of his marriage - he didn't behave like a lethario, certainly.

It is reasonable to doubt that it was Dan's baby. Alex slit her wrists when he was going to leave, she knew him for 24 hours! She wasn't even pregnant (if we assume it was Dan's baby.) Why so desperate?!

She seduced him and he was easily seduced, she had a plan. She saw Dan as an object to use, she is incapable of loving anyone.
She might have been pregnant to another man and he abandoned her. She slit her wrists and Dan passed the test, he didn't run or call an ambulance and run, he stayed with her! She saw that as a weakness, and she went in for the kill.

Pregnant with Dan's child

She has morning sickness
Dan calls her gynecologist, who confirms her pregnancy
Everything she says and does after finding out about her pregnancy convinced me 100%
She wants Dan to be co-parenting - would be difficult without a child
The script wants us to believe in her - she is not a Monster and Dan is not an Angel

If Alex was really pregnant, she wouldn't have killed herself in the original ending because if Dan was indeed the bio dad, that child would have tied her to him forever however delusional she was about their relationship. Also, since Beth also knew about the pregnancy and shot Alex (justifiable homicide), wouldn't she be culpable for killing the alleged unborn child? The pregnancy was actually the selling point for the producers turning James Dearden's short film Diversion into this movie but they didn't resolve the issue either way and it remains ambiguous. I don't think she was really pregnant; her demeanor wouldn't have been so irrational because she would be holding all the cards until that baby was born and a paternity test would prove Dan was the father!

I don't think Alex was pregnant.

But Glenn Close was.
