was Alex really pregnant???

Or was she making it up?

reply

I don't get why people think her being pregnant is ambiguous. She gave Dan his card, he called and the doctor told him "congratulations"... implying delusional Alex probably told the doctor they were a happy couple trying for a baby. Plus, Dan found a used pregnancy test in her medicine cabinet. I think they would have thrown in clues that she wasn't pregnant if she was in fact lying about it.

I believe she was pregnant. It made her death even more disturbing than if she'd gone it alone.

reply

Yeah the doctor part is pretty conclusive -- the pregnancy test isn't, really. But still.. who knows what evil plans Alex made... *conspiracy theories*

I also think that even if she hadn't been pregnant (which I firmly believe she was), she would have probably made out she was to try to trap Dan then invent some miscarriage later on. It just so happened she was pregnant.

Another telling moment was when she softened when speaking of keeping the baby and asking if he wanted to be a part of it. She seemed to have thought about the longer term and was quite reflective like she had let her guard down for a moment.

I don't buy it. I think she made it up to try to hold on to him.

So you think she psychically sensed he was going to come into her apartment and she left that test in the medicine cabinet?

I believe she was pregnant. However, Alex did a lot of sneaky things. To have Dan call and check with the doctor means she had to have had a man play along pretending to be a doctor. Unlikely. Pregnancy tests can make the odd mistake. A doctor after doing a physical check on a woman to see if she is pregnant? They don't make that mistake. So yeah, I think she was pregnant. It sucks for the innocent unborn child, he/she had nothing to do with it and it never saw the light of day, but I think that's what this whole movie was about. It was about consequences. Two people make a horrible mistake, and of all the stuff we see in the movie not only does Alex die, but Dan's unborn child.

We are to assume that Dan and Beth reconcile and stay together. But it wouldn't be easy. Dan cheated, lied and slept with a woman behind Beth's back. And that's not the worst of it. Alex wrecked his car, killed their bunny, kidnapped their child and all of this caused Beth to nearly die in a car crash. Not to mention Dan's reputation professionally likely to take a hit after this. So an unborn child being punished for these actions, is just another cherry on top. It is another thing Dan will have to live with.

Fatal Attraction is one of my favorite films from the 1980's but the one scene I did not care for was when Dan snuck into her apartment building to find all those clues(of course the movie is in the old tradition of people who keep newspaper clippings). It was better to be left ambiguous.

Nobody with any sense of morality really sympathises with Dan but in the context of the plot, he no longer wanted to have any contact with her and yet he wanted to know what sort of "nutcase" he was dealing with given her own stalking behaviours. So we can see why he did it - out of desperation.

I think it was an important scene for the audience because the first very telling clue is of course the obituary in the newspaper clipping which confirms that her father really is deceased after she tried to make her revelation into a joke in the park that Sunday (because she didn't want Dan to pity her I imagine).

The pregnancy test however was still boxed if I recall?? That was only relevant in the point of case that she actually had one so had either needed to take one, HAD taken one or was hoping to have fallen pregnant either by Dan or some other guy. But I do believe she was pregnant.

Yeah, exactly...and she also got a physician to pretend she was pregnant as well. lol

It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?

reply

Watch the movie again - there is no doubt at all that she Is pregnant!

The card could have been for anyone. Pregnancy tests, well you're supposed to check them after 10 minutes or so. A double line may come up anyway after that, pregnant or not so not reliable to be looking at an old one.

Didn't she drink alcohol and ride a roller coaster? Those are both things recommended against while you're pregnant.

If Alex is pregnant, how could anyone be sure it was Dan's baby? Not to excuse him in any way, but would Alex tell the truth if she was sleeping with other men? Afaik, Dan didn't ask the doctor how many months pregnant Alex was.

Edit to add - Was it specified how much time elapsed from their weekend together, until she told Dan she was pregnant.

I think that is a mystery that the writer and director of the film will keep to themselves and leave us in suspense. We don't even know anything about Alex, about the possibility that she has always been unstable from the beginning or if she only cracked after meeting Dan.

I had a stalker once who faked a pregnancy, and used the same claims Alex did, I strongly believe she made it up to trap Dan. It's very common that women like Alex would do that.
