Best child performance ever?

christian bale was absolutely amazing in this and I can't recall ever having seen a better performance by a child ever is this the best one?

Definitely one of the best, especially considering Christian Bale carried the film and is in almost every scene, amazing for a child of that age in his first starring major motion picture role. Interestingly about the same time Empire of the Sun was released two other excellent films of life through a young boys eyes also came out, Hope and Glory and Cinema Paradiso.

Bale was wonderful. I won't compare, but I have always also liked Peggy Ann Garner in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." Another very moving performance.
