Is The Book Recommended?

I only just watched this movie, and loved it.
I think it is a very good film with an excellent structure that shows how people's dreams can lead them to spiral into frustrated madness.
I am curious on whether to buy the book off eBay and read it to compare it to the film?
Could somebody tell me whether the book is worth reading and if it as good as the film?
Thanks,
Sarah

I'm currently reading the book, and I've not actually seen the movie, so I can't compare them that way. But the book it self is very exciting. It kinda had a slow start ( only with in the first 20 pages), but then it's pretty fast paced. It's funny and the characterization of Father is so good that you begin to get into hating him very quickly.
I'd recommend it.

Yeah, I would recommend the book, since I've read it and seen the film. The end is a bit different in the book, but it's very good.

"I'll see ya." "Not if I see you first."

i haven't read it, but I've read about 7 books by Paul Theroux, and every one was fantastic. He's a great writer and a funny guy, and I have no doubt this would be fabulous, especially becuase the movie is so good and its such a great story

reply

Absolutely.

The film follows the book verbatim, and is rich in descriptions of the jungles, rivers, and lagoon. The book also explains a few cultural beliefs of the Zambus that were lightly mentioned in the film. The book also sheds more light on the emotional pain suffered by the sons Charlie and Jerry. The boys keep their pain inside, and never let it show, which is exactly how the boys are portrayed in the film. In the book, we see more inside Charlie's mind, we see his emotional suffering.

There are a few events in the book that are not in the film, but, the film follows the book verbatim.

Allie's demise is a little different in the book.

I know, and the ending of the film is a bit more ambiguous than the novel, because in the film, the return to America is implied through a nod and through a camera shot of the river leading to the ocean, whereas in the book, it is explicitally made clear they are returning to America (taxi cab).

Can also only say YES - READ THIS BOOK NOW!!! But only if you like quality novels. It isn't an action thriller, but it is a very, very enjoyable read. I finished it this week and cannot recommend it too highly. G'Luck, Canadrian

It is one of my favorite books and Paul Theroux is always worth reading ....

one major difference: the movie is in colour whereas the book is in black and white...

I honestly don't know. I usually love the books so much better than the movie but in this case I like the movie better than the book. The book has it's very slow parts. Parts I just wanted to skip over. I mean the book is good by itself. But compared to be movie...I go with the movie.

I would definately read the book. Although it's a bit slow to start, once you get into it it's a lot better than the movie. The charcters are developed more, and Allie comes across as more of a maniac, which makes their situation rather more desperate. The ending is also a bit different; I read the book first and was quite shocked at how they left out some parts at the end of the film because those parts were crucial to show how Allie affected his family.

SPOILER-DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT THE BOOK TO BE SPOILT
btw does anyone know the code to make the text white, so I don't have to waste space?

The part where Charlie and Jerry tie Allie up, which causes him to hit his head, which causes him to get shot-basically they were part of the reason why he died. Also at the end, when he gets eaten by vultures, he purposely crawls away to die, which shows how he'd changed.
