The music of Highlander
Highlander has became a cultural milestone, spawning multiple syndicated TV series (e.g., Raven) and sequels. And, yes, some shit sequels, too. It was driven by the directing of Russell Mulcahy and the music of Queen.
At that time, Queen were under contract to Hollywood Records, a branch of Disney that was an outgrowth of Hollywood Pictures, which was Disney’s first “breakaway” brand, meaning that it could do R-rated movies under the aegis of Disney. Also at that time, Queen were kind of on the ropes. The flush of their initial albums was fading. The future appeared grim.
Then they had Queen do the score for Highlander.
“It is a Kind of Magic.” “Who Wants to Live Forever?” Writing for this inspired fantasy film reignited the Queen of Queen 2, with its Side White and Side Black (including “The March of the Black Queen”). This is from the days of vinyl, boys and girls, when albums had 2 sides to them. Queen were always at their zenith when doing fantasy; but then, who among us is not?
Does the word “synergy” mean anything to you? The rest is history.
