lol David and the beach boys

I know david in general ain't all that hip in the 80's or 70's since I think listing to him proves it. Along with the fact he knows the beach boys who were fossil in the 70's as much as the 80's right?

The Beach Boys' classic material saw a huge revival in the mid-70s after the success of 'American Graffiti', released to theaters in 1973. At one point in the '70s, the Beach Boys were even the biggest act in America, though it had much more to do with interest in their old hits than it did their then-current catalogue.

So, it makes sense that David would be a fan of 'I Get Around', an old song that had become popular again in his youth. Then, throw in the fact that the Beach Boys were marketed as 'America's Band' by the mid-80s (and were regular performers during Washington D.C.'s yearly 4th of July concert celebrations) and you see two key reasons why they would include that musical scene in the movie.

The Beach Boys weren't qutie fossils then, they were still a very popular touring band. I was the same age in 1986 and a big fan of their music back then, and still am today.

Even if I wasn't around then, I'm a huge pop culture/music geek.

The Beach Boys in 1978 were kind of how a band like Green Day is now... i.e. past their prime hits, but still recent enough to be very well-known (and I think they were always legends), so it's not a surprise David liked them.

I grew up in the mid 80s to mid 90s, and I liked a mixture of (then) contemporary 80s music, along with 60s/70s oldies my parents listened to. That's probably much more common than people think.

His rocking out to "I Get Around" has always been one of my favorite scenes from this film, haha. NOW THIS IS MUSIC!

The Beach Boys NEVER really went out of style. They are still around today, touring and are very popular. Second, I think David would have liked an old song from the 60s because it was something from the past. He was trying to get back to 1978 and an old song from the Beach Boys would have been something he heard on the radio back then, as well as reminded him of the past.

I like the Beach Boys.

Plus, I get the impression that the 1960s were still cool and well liked in the 70s and there wasn't a backlash. Sure, a few things were probably lost on the youth of that time, and there were some new things (i.e. disco, punk rock, funk) but overall I see the 1964-1979/80 time as kinda blending together pop culturally, as well as socially and politically.

And if David was a kinda sheltered suburban kid that wasn't that cool or hip anyway, it'd make perfect sense he'd like a mid 60s song in 1978.

I always did wonder why David was so into a song that would have been considered pretty old for a 12 year old in 1978. I chalked it up to the Beach Boys being the only one he recognized. I was 12 in 1988 and there was no way in hell any kid would start blasting a song from 1974. But 80s and 90s kids probably were more snobby and stuck up then any other group.

reply

Well, that's not really true. The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin are still REALLY POPULAR among kids even today DECADES after these songs came out. Also, like I told the other poster, the Beach Boys have ALWAYS remained popular! And like you said (and I said this too) David was very happy to hear a song from the past. It would have been something he could relate to as he didn't like being in 1986. So, a song from the 60s would have reminded him of something he had heard on the radio back in 1978.
