the ship and the way Disney is treating it.

If you ever visit Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, take the backlot tour. On the tour, you can see the actual ship from Flight Of The Navigator. The only problem I have is how bad they have let the ship, and all the other vehicles in the boneyard to get. The Ship is turning BLACK!!!!!!!!! Ugh.

The ship is still at MGM, I see it fairly often when I go to the park. It is still in pretty bad shape, and I don't think they have any plans to put the money into renovating it. Its one of those props on the tour that is very random and most people don't even pay any attention to it. The tram doesnt even stop when you're passing by it, so you really only get to see it for a few seconds. Its kinda sad, but I guess at least we have the movie to look back on and enjoy.

I go to Disney World every year! That ship has been there FOREVER. It was there when MGM first opened, it didn't look so hot then either. But It still makes me smile just to see it! Rembering how much I loved this movie and there is an actual piece of it right there infront of me:)

it's a sad state of affairs, most of our favorite props/cars are just rotting away, Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters (they say it's getting a facelift, we'll see) and the only part of Blue Thunder is basically rotting (the front cockpit and skids) the deloreans from BTTF (the actual ones are sitting on the backlot out of sight, i've seen pics of the the BTTF3 deloreans, tires flat looking sad) it's really sad, pieces of american film history left out to rot

now i'm not saying keep them all in glass cases or anyhything, but at least keep them up and looking good, heck restore ecto 1 and drive it around the lot with the siren going, i'm sure the crowds would love that.

how sad, i used to love this movie when i was little....they dont care about the great movies from the 80s now its all just lilo and stich and stuff

reply

It's interesting seeing this topic, because I thought exactly the same thing about that Max prop when I went to Disney MGM Studios back in 1999. Couldn't believe how they were just leaving it to fester in the rain like that.

Just a couple more sad pics of it. You can see the neglect in better detail. In one of the pics, it appears that they actually tried to use DUCT TAPE to repair it.

From the pics you posted, it looks like it was made of fiber glass and perhaps painted with a metallic color. I guess the paint is starting to go and the black primer is showing up.

reply

well at least it's still there

I mean a dirty one is better than none at all right? and besides it IS well over twenty years old

back in 98 I did a titty comedy for Skinemax. Sex Camp, ya remember it?

reply

Why isn't it hovering like it is in the movie?

Did it run out of gas?

reply

Yeesh it looks like it burned up entering the atmosphere!

reply

How crappy is that!! Jesus, slap a coat of paint on that. How much would that cost really? It just makes the park seem cheap and run down.

Offs, instead of sitting here complaining, get off your butts, organize, & DO something!

If they're sitting on the backlot wasting away, they COULD be considered ABANDONED! Which means their might be some way to get a court to officially declare them as such & allow the fans to rescue them from destruction, or at least force the studio to fix them up!

Thats what a guy (whose first name is Dale, I dont remember his second name, he goes by the handle "The Time Lord" - I met him at a convention) did with the original TARDIS from the old Doctor Who. The BBC had abandoned it and he bought it off them, repaired it, and stored it in his back garden between conventions. When they came to making the new modern series the BBC bought it back off him.

Get the courts to force the studio to fix them up? Are you serious? It saddens me to see an icon from my childhood in such decay, but things change, life moves on. You can't preserve everything forever. And to suggest such a blatant misuse of the judicial system is ludicrous. There are already enough frivolous lawsuits clogging up the system as it is. If you want to see it preserved so badly, go offer to buy it from Disney and fix it up yourself. But I'm going to guess you're not willing to do that. You're just going to sit on your computer and complain on the Internet that no one's doing anything about it even though you are not willing to do something yourself.

Last time I took the tour at MGM the ship was not even there anymore! I wonder what the did with it. I remember seeing it for the first time years and years ago and was sooo excited! FOTN will always be one of my favs!

reply

They must have because I was down there in mid-July (just a couple weeks ago) and it was bright and shiny!

Yeah but still they could atleast take better care of it and not let it rot away

reply

Looks like they repainted it lately. Looks much nicer than it did before.

reply

I haven't seen any recent pics, but there's this company who can put a reflective coating (looks JUST like chrome) on basically anything, fiberglass, plastic, etc.

i'll have to see if I can find some recent pics, just to see what it looks like.

Once a film is over, most movie houses don't care about upkeep. I mean, why should they? The props served their purpose, and don't need to be used again.

It's only if a person obtained them, would they be well cared for. But still you see things like the Dipmobile with it's tires out of air. I remember seeing a replica of the BTTF DeLorean at Universal Studios, where the dash was so sun-baked that it had disintegrated into various-sized fragments.

The Tri-maxxian Drone Ship is one of many things that are just put out for display with no money given to upkeep.

Damn looks nice they fixed it up I bet cause they finally noticed how crappy it looked and wanted it to look "nice" not cause of what it is but for the park. Anyway doesn't look all chrome anymore but in perfect shape they out to put a cover over it somehow. Anyway I guess all the whining on this topic payed off they were looking at this afterall.
