If you ever visit Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, take the backlot tour. On the tour, you can see the actual ship from Flight Of The Navigator. The only problem I have is how bad they have let the ship, and all the other vehicles in the boneyard to get. The Ship is turning BLACK!!!!!!!!! Ugh.
Geez, that really is too bad. I saw it back in '90 and again in '95, and it was still shiny then, too. People still watch the movie and they still go to WDW to see the ship, so they really should take better care of it.
Hey the movie is actually on tv right now. I was just flipping through channels and found it on. I used to love the movie and forgot all about it. Those are nice but very sad pictures of the ship.
Thanks for the link and pics korninakilt it was nice to see the ship/max again, although I still do not know why paul reubems aka pee wee herman was refered to as actor paul mall in this film.
Maybe it was Paul's decision to have a fake last name, because back then he only wanted to be known as his character name Pee-Wee Herman, not his real name, but then that raises the question, why didn't he just use Pee-Wee Herman, instead of Paul Mall? Yeah that's weird
Its really painful to look at those pictures, flight of the navigator is such a classic! I bet if someone called Joey Cramer (David) he would have something to say about it!!
I was at MGM in 1986 and 1988 and the spaceship looked great on one of those trips. Maybe both trips. Here's how long ago it was. The shell of the Golden Girls house and Backdraft were pretty rad. I'm sure this is gone but it was pretty cool. They had a "Honey I shrunk the Kids" bumble bee thing. The second time I took the tour I got up front and through my hand up and got chosen to get on the bee. That bee was freakin huge. That was pretty fun. I am trying to remember what else was on that tour. Jaws jumped at us I think. Something to do with water spraying. Something with King Kong. That was a long time ago.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that's the actual ship that was used. It might be one of the ships built for other purposes in the movie.....Or a "stunt ship" or something like that. But I get the feeling there's a ship housed in a warehouse somewhere that's kept in much better shape.
I know there were at least 5 DeLoreans used in Back to the Future (for various uses), and that the one parked at Universal Studios Hollywood is not one of them. There is a guy who lives in Southern California who owns it and leases it to Universal Studios to show in front of Back to the Future: The Ride. I'm not saying the ship in this picture... http://photobucket.com/albums/v433/optims129/?action=view¤t=101_0041.jpg .... is owned by a private collector and is leased to WDW. That I don't know. But did anyone notice the Skiff from Return of the Jedi (in that same picture)? That might just be somethin made out of wood for the cameras to photograph or for promotional reasons. But that is not the only Skiff in existence....just sitting outside in a resort "boneyard" under all the elements. Can't be. The nice one is kept with LucasFilm.
That ship I think was when David and Max are trying to ask for directions, and the ship hovers down next to a red Mustang convertible. The hole in the side could have been the insertion point for a crane arm to lower the ship down. The ship in that close-up only hovered down, and then hovered up.
I've been to the Disneyland Paris 'Boneyard' and the guide there says they're all genuine film props. But then those were not made from wood, just things like Greek urns, Egyptian 'artifacts', Dinotopia sets and the Reign of Fire hot set. Although they did have some Pearl Harbour vehicles. Only perishable items were the Pearl Harbour costumes which were behind glass in the costume building anyway.
On the tours I saw it on from 95-03, they had two ships, one closed, and one with the "door" open. Sad that they've been let go, but that's what happens in boneyards, I guess. Still it IS an attraction. Anyone tour recently? Maybe it's been cleaned up, since they had to re-configure for the Lights, Motors, Action Stunt Show.

When I went in the early-mid 90's it looked like they were cleaning it decently, usually shiny and clean, not corrison or anything on it like it looks in the pics posted, sad to see it go like that, why don't they just sell it off to someone who might want to put it in a movie museum or something?
