the basketball kill!!

Amazing! disturbing! sick!
This has to be one of the most original and goriest scenes in horror cinema history! This scence makes the entire movie.

Kirsty Swanson throws a basketball directly to this mad woman's head...the head immediately explodes!
The headless body then starts running in circles.

You have to watch it to believe it !

I love this website, because you can find things like this. I was thinking back to a movie I saw as a kid (my dad loved horor movies), I was only about 15 or so. All I remebered about this movie was a scene where a womans head was exploded by a basketball, and then dances a little like a chicken with it's head cut off.

Damn scene kept me up all night. And I had no idea who was in the movie, the movies name, when it came out. But a little seach on IMDB through plots helped me find it.

Thanks IMDB, for helping me deal with my demons. :)

I always loved that classic scene, although this is a fair horror film by Wes Craven, some enjoyed it and some didn't. But I think most people enjoyed this film because of the basketball scene. Anne Ramsey was always a terrific character actress, a year before she did Deadly Friend, she starred in Steven Spielberg's The Goonies and the a year later she recieved an Oscar nomination for her role in Danny Devito's Throw Momma from the Train. These three movies, I think pretty much made Anne Ramsey's career, it was a shame she died at the age of 60 from throat cancer just two years later.

Amazing....you're post MovieJeff was the exact same thing that made me find this movie. Lll I could remember was the basketball scene and that the women who got nailed was the same women from "Throw Mamma from the Train". That's uncanny!! Anyways, I too can sleep well knowing others were terrified by this scene when they were kids. Thanks IMDB for solving yet another movie mystery. Is there a better site than this....I think not!!

Okay, so unlike alot of people, I saw this movie for the first time about 2 years ago (I thank my girlfriend at the time- now my wife- for having it on VHS), but I heard about it from my sister when I was 6; all she talked about was the basketball scene.
I'm just waiting to get the DVD of it so I can frame by frame that scene and see exactly how they did it :).

**Spoilers**

A great scene, a bit unnecessary maybe but by this time Craven had lost creative control of Deadly Friend thanks to Mark Tappin the then president of Warner Brothers he was also the man responsible for that utterly dire ending, anyway what about Swansons performance?, I thought she did an amazing job of playing the undead Samantha, I absolutely love the scene in the shed where Paul is teaching her how to sit up right for the first time, Charles Bernsteins music kicks in, which sets the scene up perfectly, a great score I think. Matt Laborteaux is just as fantastic, for some reason all he seems to be doing is voice over work, which is a shame because the boy can act, mind you Kristy Swansons career hardly took off apart from Buffy. Check out the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it's fantastic!!

I saw this movie when it came out in the theater with my mom. I was a child at the time. I am 28 now. I loved this movie. I really liked Kristy Swanson at the time. I later saw her in Flowers in The attic. The part where Swanson sort of reconizes Paul but then goes back to being the robot was great (towards the end when the police told her to put her hands up). Did anyone noticed that it was the same back lot that was used in Fright Night? I really like Matt Labotrteaux in this film as the Dr Frankenstein type doctor who cared for Sam. I think the one the reasons this movie didn't completly suck was because of the character development between Paul and Sam. I am going to read the book Friend. I just ordered it.

I'll get to the point in a sec but does anyone here know who Carnage is? Spidey bad guy?

reply

HOLY CRAP!! I remember that!!! I was so damn little when I seen that scene and it scared the crap out of me! More disturbing because it's a basketball. We all know what knives, spears, machetes and chainsaws can do, but a BASKETBALL?! Something otherwise harmless becoming a full death apparatus. Yes, I sat up many nights after watching that.

Definate;y one of the alltime great kills in movie history.

Classic scene all the way

"What business is it of yours where I'm from, friendo?" - Anton Chigurh, No Country for Old Men

reply

Yes - this scene scared the CRAP out of me when I saw it, especially the way the headless body ran around like a decapitated chicken before it died. I rented this on VHS back in the day and paused it during this whole sequence, and then watched it frame-by-frame. If you watch closely, you can see that they switched Ann Ramsey's head with a latex double and they edited it right before the head explodes. Also, the scene at the end still creeps me out to this very day, and I really felt for Sam's character. Man! She had a hard way to go!

I wouldn't be surprised if there was either a re-make or a sequel - hell, The TRON sequel (named TR2N) is coming out in 2011, some 29 years after it debuted in 1982, there's a Poltergeist remake coming out in the next couple years (I hope it's a sequel, though), and I'm sure there are more 80s properties that will be remade or sequeled. IF this one is redone, I hope it is done right.

OH NOES MAMA FRATELLI'S HEAD GO BOOM! That scene was priceless! I think that was the beginning of Buffy displaying her ass kicking power lol

I happened to catch this on cable several years ago and this scene definitely stuck in my mind. I just bought the Dvd at Big Lots for $3!

I hated it at first, but realize you could only get something like this from the ending.

I would have rather had BB shoot her with her own shotgun. Same way BB was injured, since she pushed Sam's dad down the stairs first.

Then the neighbours would hear the gunshot and call the police.
