WHAT DO THEY SAY IN CHINESE?

Throughout this movie the characters say things in Chinese. The DVD doesn't have a translation in the subtitles... neither does close captioning when it airs on TV. Does ANYONE have translations of what is said? After an exhaustive internet search I can find next to nothing and I'm surprised no one has wanted to know this as well!!

reply

Can you tell me a scene you're referring to? Most of the Chinese lines I remember, someone else is already interpreting in English for the characters. Like when they're going down the elevator and Eddie is interpreting for Thunder.

reply

First time it happens is near the beginning when Jack is driving his truck with Wang into San Fran after Miao Yin... Jack is going the wrong way down a one way street heading towards Egg Shen's tour bus... Egg Shen sees the truck, and begins talking in Chinese all the way through the near miss.

Actually, this occurs a lot throughout the movie. I cannot find translations for any of it!

reply

Hey Prisoner,

I completely forgot about that scene, but you're right. I remember Egg yelling when the truck is coming.

Sean_ohlson-1 maybe right too. It's been a long time ago but it seems like I remember hearing something like that as well. They were just speaking gibberish that sounded chinese. As silly as that movie is, I wouldn't be surprised!

reply

This may simply be urban legend, but I was told a lot of the guys didn't actually speak Chinese at all. They just babbled 'Chinese sounding nonsense' when it was their turn to talk. It would explain a lack of translation.

reply

Can you link where you found this? Because that would be extremely funny and I would love to read that!

reply

No, this was pre-internet. I actually heard people say it out loud. As I said, I may have simply been an urban myth.

Hey all, Hi prisoner-7,
A response after 8 years.... mkay...
I have been surprised as well, for at least 8 years...
Thanks to other contributors underlining my feeling that at least part of the spoken 'Chinese' may be gibberish.
But that's only part, surely. I'm not Chinese and so learning what is said takes a lot of time.
Now for some (parts) of the parts:

Egg Shen driving his bus towards Jack's truck: he starts with the words "wei wei", which is Chinese for something like 'hello, hello'.

Rain is called yu-san. Yu (3rd tonal form of Chinese) is the word for rain. San is a Japanese word for expressing respect towards a person (e.g. Oca-san, meaning mother). I suspect that the use of Japanese is born from much of the martial arts exposure in the West has been through Japanese karate and judo.

James Hong (Lo Pan) when he comes wheeling in after Gracie was captured by the sewer monster, can be heared saying something quite like: "Ah... ta lai le cong de" (phonetic thaa laay la tsong de?), which translates into: 'Ah, where did she come from?'.

Thunder with his wingkong posse after the heroes and the chinese girls at the bath they all jump into, says something like "da she! da she!". This would translate well into 'Shoot! shoot'

The rest I have difficulty with, still.
I have the feeling James Hong, and Carter Wong speak real Chinese/Cantonese. Of Victor Wong I'm not sure if it's real or a combination of real words and gibberish, and of the rest I am becoming quite sure it's largely or entirely gibberish.

Wang, entering the main entrance of the Wing Kong exchange with Jack, pretending to be phone company, says: "wei, Ching-ti". While wei means hello, I think Ching-ti is a movie joke, as the movie is about the God of the East, Ching-Ti, but which - I think - has no real meaning.

The wounded Chang-sing and Wang talking when Jack and Wang have just escaped the fight and climb through the window: I checked with a native Chinese speaker and she couldn't understand.

reply

Rain isn't called Yu-San. He's called Yu Shen - "rain spirit" or "rain god".

By the way, the dialect used for all characters is Cantonese and it's supposed to all be authentic.
Some of the actors are just pretty bad at speaking it.

I have been trying to work on subtitles for the Chinese parts of this Glorious movie. But they are very hard to find.

I found a couple of bits that have been translated by others in various places, and pieced the remaining ones together via context, some research and a bit of guess work, but I do not speak Cantonese.

If anyone can correct any of these lines It would be awesome :)
