Why do old people love Matlock? - Matlock (1986) Discussion

I'm not old (matter of opinion)- I'm 48 and love Matlock, Columbo, Rockford Files, Perry Mason, and a few other old murder mysteries. All feature a likable star and NO BLOOD AND GORE!!! Forget the special effects and CSI-type shows.

Andy Griffith seems to be genuinely nice, and also reminds me of my Uncle Earl! There is nothing to dislike about him. Through reruns of all of Andy's shows, I hope the younger generation can come to love and respect him as he deserves. Beats ALL the crap on TV these days.

It is working in my Daughter's case. I have a four year old little girl who LOVES Matlock. She hears that music come on, and she comes running. She will also sit and watch an entire episode. She won't even do that with Dora.

Same here. Like Murder She Wrote, you get good storylines, occasional name actors (though bigger stars on MSW).

You've named so many wonderful shows, but I can't believe you left out the best of the best: Quincy!

You are definitely not old. Neither am I. These are some of my favorite shows, too. I think we enjoy them because they remind us of a kinder, gentler time. A time when we could play outside from the time we woke up as long as we were home by the time the streetlights came on. And if it was raining and we couldn't play outside, we played board games. A time when we watched these awesome television programs as a family. And Sunday was a special day because Bonanza didn't start until 9pm, so we got to stay up late. Even though The Andy Griffith Show was in black and white, we could smell Aunt Bee's pie cooling on the window sill. Shows depended on brilliant scripts and an actor's perfect timing, not kill counts and CG.

You are also young enough to remember great music. Songs with harmony, instruments, and lyrics, not poems with noise, or people just mouthing the words, or bands with people singing but not playing instruments. Can you name the artist and the song that contains the lyrics:

When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say "Do you remember when?"

You hit it right on the nail --- however, you left out one of my favorites: MURDER SHE WROTE.

I love those shows because of the LACK of blood and gore, the mystery and the manner in which each character FINDS the murderer.

I agree Matlock is really a good person and lawyer, I think he appeals to older generation and some of the younger set, because the show is real and not fake. I myself like the older tv shows then many of the new ones.

I think it is because he puts those young whipper-snappers in there place. And stops them from Skate-boarding on the side walk.

But yeah, I'm 22, always watch it on WGN or TBS when I'm up late. I remember watching it as a young kid, I think he may remind me of my grandfather or something. Regardless, it's a good, simple show that doesn't require a lot of involvement to watch. 24 or something of that nature, you have to watch every episode from the beginning to understand what's happening. Matlock is set up in simple little vignettes, where everything is always back to normal at the end of the episode. Maybe we Generation Y people like it for the same reason the elderly do: short attention spans. :)

I just had to look at the IMDB rating by age to see if I was out of place before posting. Oh well, I am. I am in my thirties and female. So, it is a guilty pleasure.

Hey, I'm 27 and enjoy watching Matlock, Columbo, McMillian and Wife, and Quincy ME. I suppose that these shows influenced me to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Im 20 years old and I think that Matlock is a great show. I think that there are two reason that older people love this show. The first reason is because it has Andy Grifith in it. He has been around for a long time and older people seem to love him. The other reason that older people seem to like it more than younger people is because its generally on durning the day. Younger people are generally working or going to school at this time. Older people are retired and are at home watchin TV in there spare time. Younger people would like it more if they had more of a chance to watch it. When I was younger I loved it because it was the best show to watch during the day. Now that im always busy I have no time to watch it. I think that the same thing applies for the show "The price is right," although younger people tend to like this show more.

OMG, who knew that there were so many other twenty-somethings who love mystery shows. I am constantly told that I have old lady hobbies, I read, knit, and watch murder mysteries like Matlock, Perry Mason, Columbo, Murder she Wrote, and Monk. I do "normal" young things but give me an "old fashioned" mystery any day.

i'm watching "The Biker" right now on Hallmark and i watched alittle bit of "The Cover Girl" but i am really starting to love this show.
