...did you not see the disclaimer at the beginning? Where it says that this movie does NOT mean to portray ALL asians like this, and that most asians are hard working and contribute much to our culture?
You
are joking Heatsketch?
(In America?) They force an adult to read a disclaimer (tacked on to the start of the film) before they watch a work of fiction? Is that just for this film? (I understand at the time people WHO HAD NEVER EVEN SEEN THE FILM caused uproar and wanted it banned)
That is disgraceful, mainly because it causes the audience to 'see' exactly the opposite view of what the disclaimer states.
Anyone who watches this film, without predjudice/pre-judgement, won't even notice ANY underlying racial motive for the making of this film.
Herbert - Great, brave, smart, loyal...very hard-working!
Tracy - Does an expose on a crimelord, i.e. puts her life on the line...Finds Stanley White's power 'sexy', nothing strange there. Intelligent enough to take his 'racist' remarks with a pinch of salt.
Joey Tai - Extremely charismatic, you almost root for him, a great anti-hero. Smart in any sense of the world...Just happens to be a mafia boss (do we hear Italians whinge about 'The Godfather'?...No.).
Gang members - They're money collectors for the triad's 'protection racket', they're not meant to be nice.
Stanley White - Sure, he uses old-fashioned 'racist' language, but that's realistic for his (Vietnam) generation. However, he clearly respects many of the 'elders' and the (hard-working) man in the soy bean basement. If he was truly racist he'd hardly have sex with Tracy. He wants to make China Town a better place.
... I don't know how I dug this out of the recesses of my mind...but who wrote the screenplay for this film?

P.S. The original poster of this topic was a 'one post wonder' and is long gone. This is not a rant at them, this is purely for the benefit of any newcomers and this is how it
truly is. This is an excellent film and is anti-triad, not anti-chinese.
