nothing but typical degradation of asian women

what well-minded woman, or human being for that matter would have sex with someone who openly uses malign and racist language towards an entire race of people. Asian Women are not idiots and they are not sex fiends, and all this movie does is portray negative stereotypes that have been plauging our society since the beginning of film and media. i'm sure a lot of the viewers/enjoyers of this movie are probably just lonely degenerate, chauvinistic jerkoffs..to you, please regard this message: you're a pig. thank you

I don't think the Stanley White character was rascist. He was a cop, and being that the criminals in this movie were Chinese, he's out to get them. He doesn't have to respect the Chinese Tong/Mafia, the Chinese gangs, and refused to be bribed or pressured politically by them.
Sure he could refrain from calling the Chinese *beep* and *beep* but that's the character. That's who he is. That's the cop who doesn't bow down to anybody to do his job. Look at how he speaks to his colleagues, his superiors, and even his wife. That's Stanley.
Is he a little crazy? Sure, but racist...I don't believe so.

In his speech to the reporter before the shooting at the restaurant, he even says how the Chinese don't care to remember about how they were mistreated building the railroads, how none of the Chinese speak up to complain or do something about crime but instead pass "extortion and racketeering" off as "tradition". He knew the Chinese weren't about to change anything about how things were being done in Chinatown, but he was. That was his job, to clean up the mess that people turned a blind eye to.

It's true that many women would find the Stanley White character obnoxious and unappealing. But he wasn't a totally bad guy. He wouldn't be bribed, he wouldn't take the easy way out and let things go on as they always have. He wanted to make a difference in Chinatown.
Yeah, he cheated on his wife...but I bet there's someone you know that's cheated on their spouse too. Nobody's perfect, Stanley White wasn't supposed to be perfect. That's what made Mickey Rourke's portrayal so good. Stanley White didn't give a rat's ass what you thought of him, but nothing was gonna stop him from doing his job. That was his strength, which at the same time was his greatest weakness.

"what well-minded woman, or human being for that matter would have sex with someone who openly uses malign and racist language towards an entire race of people."

What well-minded woman, (or would you prefer womyn), would have sex with her boss to further her career? Don't bother answering, as it was a rhetorical question, and frankly I don't care.

Quit analyzing the film as a feminist and look at it from a more objective point of view. That might help you with your problem.

On a side note, what about posting on the internet makes you think it's acceptable to disregard proper grammar? Edit your post for christ sake. You write like a slob.

Were you recently dumped?

This is one of my all time favorite films. Hollywood dumped all over Michael Cimino so this film did not get a fair shake AT ALL. Too bad. A great film with great acting from Mickey Rourke and, yes, Ariane, too was very effective as a young reporter torn between he love for White(Rourke, her ability to be fair in her job, and representing her own people honestly. This was probably one of the last movies that Mickey Rourke made when he was cool. Lately almost all of his films are junk. Here's hoping that SIN CITY is his return to greatness. OH I forgot he did do some movies that were good..........THE RAINMAKER, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, and ok KNOCK OFF was not that bad .........oh MAN ON FIRE WAS AWESOME. Let me see........two of these films he was killed(MEXICO- he was shot to death, MAN ON FIRE- he got his throat cut and his cadaver was dumped in his pool.) In THE RAINMAKER, He was corrupt and got indicted. Oh, yea, in KNOCK OFF he got his choice to die: Either get mauled to death by a tiger or step on a land mine (he chose the second one). Hey, at least he killed the tiger. OK I went back and looked at his filmography and I was wrong he has been in a lot of good movies other than the few I have mentioned. Let me see in SPUN he was a drug addict who got incinerated in a camper. In ANIMAL FACTORY he was a gay or some kind of cross dresser. No.... I'm kidding, he has been in a lot of good movies, too. RUMBLEFISH, ANGEL HEART, BULLETT, THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE, BARFLY, HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN, and a number of others.

Actually, you meant "what is it about posting" and not "what about posting".

I love it when people jump on other people about their grammar, only to butcher sentences themselves.

As to the original post, women are worse than men when it comes to being pigs. Just ask any groupie.

"What are you? A Chin*, a whore, or what?"...This is my favourite film, with many quotes which can be used in everyday life. A well-reasoned, unbigotted reply by 'dial218', "There should be more men like you". Rourke's performance gets my vote as greatest performance by an actor, ever. Perhaps only surpassed by the work of Meryl Streep, she's the all-time greatest, she even does ACCENTS!

racist film indeed. But only a film.
Degrading? Yes.

Chinese girls are conservative girls, but hollywood makes em look worse than American girls.

reply

So I guess all non-Chinese "women" (not "girls" - you don't even have the dignity to refer to your own gender as an adult BTW) are all whores and sluts, mainly Americans right? So how is this not perpetuating these old fashion ideologies about Asian feminist repression by saying all Asian, oh, excuse me, Chinese "girls" are "conservatives". Have you been to a Hong Kong nightclub, guess not. How about all of those Chinese "girls" marrying and dating white guys in San Francisco, not very conservative of them to marry or date non-Chinese guys, or should I say boys? How about the shy and docile "conservative" culture of a Japanese women, I guess the Japanese porn industry is a mass delusional conspiratorial figment of the world's imagination. Oh, yeah, and there's the Thais, the people who repress women and sexuality everywhere possible, and even though prostitution is "illegal" yet it's the sex capital of the world. You have "degraded" every women (including Chinese "girls") with your absolute old-fashion incompetence and ignorance, and you did it with a flare of a simpleton, it took you barely four almost complete sentences to prove that you are an idiot and have nothing to contribute to the feminist cause, let alone an intelligent insight of the social defects and callousness of one MOVIE character: Stanley White. Such efficiencies in ignorance can only be achieve by a Chinese wom -- I'm sorry, girl. You - obviously - don't get out much, do you, hence this post.

It's pretty funny how obvious it is that you created an IMDB account just to say this. Unable to come up with a biting, poignant name in such a fit of rage, you smashed your hands on the keyboard and came up with KLSJDFL.

In any event, even if the film is racist, rational people can look past this and appreciate it for its other qualities. This does not make them "degenerate"s, or even racists for that matter. Racism is a serious problem in our society, and I would believe that asian women are probably some of its least defended victims (although muslim women seem to get it pretty bad too). Anyway, I'm pretty positive you're making things worse by sending the message that minority / women's rights supporters are lacking in the mental faculties that most normal human beings have.

reply

Rourke's character is confident and charismatic, that's why she sleeps with him.

reply

[deleted]

She might have sleep with John Lone's character since that character has charismatic and confident. I have been told by women that they want men who are confident.

At the same time, both Stanly White and Joey Tai are dangerous men and as Jeff Forworthy point out in one of his shows on Comedy Central, women dream abou going out with dangerous men. Mr. Forxworthy got that information from reading a women's magazine where they did a survey of women and most women stated that they would to go out with a dangerous man. Mr. Foxworthy also stated that in real life on the TV Show Cops, the women would be calling the cops and telling the police to lock the dangerous guys up.

reply

Yeah she might have slept with him.. but he was Asian and White wasn't. That is the hypocrisy of multicultarism. Forget your own people and *beep* other ones. LOL. Anyway this was an American movie so of course she ended up sleeping with a white man. It is the same depiction of asian women in my country too.

"what well-minded woman, or human being for that matter would have sex with someone who openly uses malign and racist language towards an entire race of people"???

Answer:
Asian women, Chinese women in particular. The movie don't degrade them, it's just a biographic rendition of them.
