Best Western ever made.

With total A-list actors and actresses, this film has everything a Western should have: romance, humour, action, excitement, and plenty of each of those. It was brilliant.

i love it too, so much

it's iconic and represents the genre well. in a way it was (IMO) the swan song, and a perfect one at that, for the heyday era of the western that spanned so many decades mainly in the 50s. the timing of this movie kinda (IMO) closed the era down, like a bookend. yeah there were a few more that flashed up after, but this one is a crown jewel which represents the classic style. please don't start sounding off with titles here, lmao. i know them all, saw them all, and LTUM SAYS THAT SILVERADO CAPPED THE GENRE< PERIOD< PLAIN AND SIMPLE. never argue with LTUM okay. it's bad fore ewe blood pressing.

antyways, love the movie. side note, i love lonesome dove too and once upon a time in the west also as majorly iconic. but timing is what makes this one set the crown. and lonesome dove was a tv series so it's really apples and oranges when comparing to features.

anywho, many cheers to silverado fans here. 

Best ever? I watched it a few nights ago for the first time on widescreen, which does make a big difference, and it does have some glorious moments. Visually, I don't think I have seen a more beautiful western. The cast is excellent and I think most of them were relative unknowns at the time of this release.

I did not like the Rosanna Arguette character. There was no chemistry whatsoever between her and Paden or with Emmett. I felt they could have removed those scenes and it would have improved the film. In a similar way, I didn't like the Linda Hunt character, either.

Jeff Golblum is a great actor, but seems kinda wasted here because he just kinda IS and doesn't say or do much other than whip out that little derringer of his.

Kevin Costner for me was almost unrecognizable because he brought such tremendous energy to the role. I have always seen him (mostly) as a lethargic actor. He almost stole every scene here. He delivers a unique colorful performance. I loved it.

Scott Glenn is pretty much what I expected, which is a good thing. A strong, solid performance.

I think I had only seen Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda so I was kinda taken aback at his very nonchalant performance here. He was good but the character was actually kinda dull.

Speaking of A Fish Called Wanda, John Cleese is very good as the sheriff of the first town they come to. I wanted to see more of him.

Brian Dennehy is perfect as Cobb. The final showdown with Paden was very good, too. But, again, I could have done without the Linda Hunt character included as she watched. I would have cut her out of that scene completely.

Danny Glover is very good as Mel but I could have done without his storylines with his family. I can say the same for the family storyline for Emmett and Jake. It was all so unnecessary.

The film's score is really wonderful.

Somewhere in this film is a masterpiece. It just needs editing. There is so much to love and yet more than enough to edit out.

I did like it enough to order the special edition dvd. So I will watch it again here shortly.

8/10

I need to re-watch it. Think I'll do it this holidays :) I'll keep your comments in mind.

I don't now about "best". Definitely top 10, probably top 5. Unforgiven has it topped, as does the Deadwood series. There was also that Robert Duval movie a few years back. The one with Costner, not the chinese brothel one with t.H. Church. that one failed.

It also has nothing on Good Bad Ugly, or the real Mag-7.

"Best"? Not hardly, Pardner, not compared to

High Noon

Once Upon a Time in the West

Lonesome Dove

The Searchers

Will Penny

The Cowboys

Shane

Ride the High Country

Lonely are the Brave

The Hired Hand

... and so many others. And not to mention that abysmally dreadful musical score with its mincing effeminacy - just bleccchhhh!

I think it was the best Western of...1985.

Better than Clint Eastwood directing and starring in "Pale Rider," Eastwood's first Western since Josey Wales(1976) 9 years earlier, and 7 years ahead of his next, "Unforgiven."

"Pale Rider" wasn't that good, but it made more money than "Silverado" because....well, Clint.

I've never even heard heard of this film , and in 1985 i was mad about films!

Crowded year. I just counted more than 40 films we went to the theater for that year, and another 20 we saw soon after on HBO. Anymore, if there are four movies in a year that would interest me enough to go to the theater, that's a big year, and I don't even go for them.

Silverado and Back to the Future were among our favorites.

I wouldn’t go that far - I remember it as a little disjointed with some random subplots that go unresolved - but it’s a fun film of which I have happy memories.

Maybe not THE best but It's up there
