Geddren a lesbian?

It's a serious question. Queen Geddren being a lesbian was something that was never said out loud, but there were moments that made me wonder:

-In the beginning, the voice over saying, "Geddren wanted you for herself"

-The image of the topless woman dancing on her magic mirror

-The female slave/companion/hand maiden that was always with her

-The over-the-top obsession with Red Sonja

-Geddren telling Sonja that they could rule side by side together

it was 1985 - they stated it as boldly as they could. It was a lot more blunt than the oyster/snail scene in Spartacus that caused such an uproar.

reply

What oyster/snail scene? I haven't seen Spartacus in ages and was just curious

reply

Laurence Olivier is in the tub getting bathed by young slave-boy Tony Curtis. He asks Tony if he likes oysters. Then asks if he likes snails. Tells him it's a matter of taste, so there's no need to morally judge preferences. Then he tells Tony that he likes both. Tony's character knows where that metaphor is going, isn't interested, & runs away from an otherwise cushy job to join the slave revolt.

She's quite obviously a lesbian (or bisexual at minimum, but I actually doubt that). Gedren is an evil character, so to underline/prove her evilness, she was written as a sexual deviant on top of everything else. Homophobic and sexist, yes, but so campy (as is the whole film), that it doesn't feel that offensive here, as it does in dozens of other movies. More like a lame joke so over-the-top that it actually starts to be funny. "I'm so wickedly and despicably evil that not only am I a woman in a position of power, I ALSO HAVE SEX WITH OTHER WOMEN!! BWAHAHA!! BWAHAHAHAAA!!!"

Of course she executed people on whim, but that goes without saying. 'How to Become an Evil Overlord/Matriarch 101' and all that..

My favourite character in this film anyway.

That first scene firmly established Gedren as a lesbian.

Well Darth Vader said the same thing to Luke Skywalker.

Given that Lucas had a brother and sister flirting with each other for the better part of 3 movies, I'm not so sure possible Star Wars incest is the best counter-example here. :)

reply

She definately wanted to take Sonja as her new chewtoy.

reply

Well they were family...and portrayed in a great movie instead of a half-arsed excuse for one.

Interesting...

Yup, I pretty much got that Geddren liked girls.

If you have to wonder after all that ... then I don't even think a big neon sign saying "LESBIAN QUEEN HERE" above the throne could help you.

Blueghost says it best. "Queen Geddren a lesbian?" Ya think?

It's also strongly hinted that Brytag is bisexual. His line "You speak of payment, I said tribute. All the tender kind and women pay tribute to Brytag".

He's basically saying that he likes girly men as well as women.

reply

I recall it as being the tender kind of tribute which is paid by women. I think "tender kind" was referring to the sexual act, and not feminine men.

reply

The line is actually, "You mention money? Tribute, I said. The tender kind ALL women pay to Brytag." So there's nothing there to suggest he's interested in sex with anyone other than women. Although given the sexually rapacious nature of the character it wouldn't surprise me if he did like men as well. Or goats or sheep or anything else with a hole in it for that matter!
