I think it's scarier than it is funny. It's funny, but for me, the light-heartedness somehow makes the movie scarier. Can't explain this, except perhaps that the constant high spirits turns the mansion into a madhouse. But...no, not a madhouse, just a place where someone really very dangerous is very very good at hiding the fact they're a killer (or killers).
Ehh it tries to go too far in the “funny” sense and it ends up taking a lot away from the movie. They should have stayed to the “mysterious and scary” tone
shareI could see how they could have taken the storyline and made something suspenseful out of it, but no, I didn't think it was scary at all, either.
shareI watched the movie with feeling for the characters. The murders were not dealt with in totally a comedic way, so that was a bit scary, but other parts of the movie were purely comedic. So for me, it was both equally.
shareThe only "scary" thing is the score. It is such a brilliant contrast to the comedy elements.
