I think it's scarier than it is funny. It's funny, but for me, the light-heartedness somehow makes the movie scarier. Can't explain this, except perhaps that the constant high spirits turns the mansion into a madhouse. But...no, not a madhouse, just a place where someone really very dangerous is very very good at hiding the fact they're a killer (or killers).
It’s like the original Ghostbusters funny AND scary. When they get separated into pairs is the most scary time.
shareit's scary from the point of view people actually die, and the political themes are fairly hair-raising (aka nasty espionage/blackmail, nuclear weapons, etc)
but the story is told in a funny tone.
The only part I ever thought was even remotely scary was when the guy in the Lounge was on the phone and says “there’s a group of people here having some sort of party and one of them is my old boss from” - BANG, and I was 8 at the time.

shareI guess I can sort of see where someone may find a couple of elements a little scary, but I have never considered it scary. It was always super funny to me.
shareIt's super funny and that's the only way I can view it now, but it truly scared me when I was a kid. When the three visitors are killed and Yvette is strangled it's so eerie because you can't see the killer, and searching in the dark for a lunatic is a scary idea the film plays absolutely somber, with the dialogue hilarious but at odds with the visual/musical tone.
But the whole beginning with the introduction of Mr. Boddy is utterly bone chilling; the actor scared the crap out of me as a kid, mostly because of the music and suspense built up before he comes in late, and the dude LOOKS scary. He isn't really funny at all, he's just a slimy, creepy bugger.
