Is Bender NOT anyone's favorite character?

If he's not, who is and why?

reply

Bender isn't mine, though I don't know for sure who is. It's really up in the air with Andrew, Brian, and Allison--mostly since they embody parts of myself on a couple different levels.

Mine is Bender. I think he appeals to us all in that we all have that disrespectful, criminal side in all of us, its just sometimes small and not put out there

Tie between Bender and Brian

I think these two are the most relatable characters in the movie for most of us

Brian and Bender get this negative label from people without really knowing them.

reply

Most relatable for most men you mean

Bender was a crybaby looking for sympathy from anyone who would listen to him. Notice how every conversation has him leading it back to him? He was a pretend tough guy, the wanna be bad boy but he just comes off as pathetic.

reply

It's funny you should say that because I don't think any conversation actually led to him talking about himself.

He smarts off constantly, but the one scene where they're sitting in the circle sharing their problems, Bender says nothing.

I can't call a guy who gets the sht beaten out of him by his dad a crybaby. (when did he ever cry about it??) The only people who didn't whine about their lives were Allison and Bender and they had the *beep* lot.

reply

He doesn't say a lot about himself, but he does seem to constantly want to be the centre of attention.

I saw in the movies as a kid when it came out and Bender was my favorite character. Upon seeing it as an adult, he is my least favorite (I even prefer Brian's mother to Bender).
He is a wise ass little punk that blames everyone else for his s**t life. I understand that Clarence Beeks provoked him, but what did Carl the Janitor do to be talked down to by Bender? Bender is a POS.

I call woo woo on you.

Who does he blame exactly? The only time he ever reacts resentfully is when Claire starts whining about how her feelings were hurt because Bender was not impressed by her lipstick trick.

The only other time Bender talks about his life is when Andy asks him about his home life.

If anyone had any right to complain about their life it was Bender. And he does so little of it in the film, even when they are all pouring their hearts out in the circle. He's mostly silent in that scene.

I don't know. Bender was just being a wise ass to Carl, he meant no harm. It was pretty typical teenage mockery and Carl stood up for himself and put Bender in his place.

I work in a store and I deal with kids who do this all the time. Mouthing off to authority figures and mocking them is just what teens do. If I got as bent out of shape as you're getting, I'd be ripping my hair out every time kids came into my store.

Also, it's not like Bender was the only person guilty in this scenario.

How about Brian shunning him in the library? You don't think that's talking down to someone? Carl is so lowly to Brian that he can't associate himself with him?

I definitely saw a smirk on Andy's face when Bender made fun of him. Claire and Allison said nothing to defend him.

At the end of the scene, you can tell that Carl has earned their respect. Not because he has a good job, but because he knows how to relate to them and how to treat them like they're people. This is something Vernon doesn't understand anymore. He takes their mockery with a grain of salt and understands that they're acting out because they're immature teenagers.

What can I say, I guess I'm turning in to an old grouch. Now get the hell off my lawn!

Bender was an *beep* He was one of those punks that would put others down because he had nothing himself. He was abusive to all because he was abused. He would be the kid I would probably knock out at school for picking on others. He's punk, now I understand why kids like him get their asses kicked daily.

State champ in martial arts, trained with firearms, I eFF'n dare you!

I always assumed Bender was the only one who eventually went on and made something of himself after that day in detention.

reply

What I like about Bender is that even though he is this punk, he does have street smarts. We see why he is like this. In fact, when Bender asked Brian if he wanted to come over sometime when asked if his home life was real, if that had been me, I would've said, "Sure, let's set a date. I'd love to watch this."

reply

Bender is my least favorite character. He's a whiny little cry baby. The entire movie all he did was whine "poor, poor pitiful me". It isn't Claire's fault his father is an abusive deadbeat. It isn't Andrew's fault he's a loser pot head. It isn't Brian's fault he has no ambition to better himself through education. And these are the kids he bullied and trashed. The only one he left alone was Allison. Vernon was 100% right about him. Hell, he even made fun of Carl for being a janitor. At least Carl is working in a job that pays a decent wage, more than likely gave him healthcare insurance, and provides him with a pension(I used to work for a board of education so I know of such things). Carl is a much better person than Bender's father that's for sure. The only time he was even close to right when he called Brian out about shop class. Otherwise, he is a pathetic loser who blames everyone else for his problems.

Hahaha this is such American's issue. But to be serious, I agreed with what you said throughout the whole movie... until the end when I personally felt like he kinda redeemed himself.
